Air quality monitoring force, the City Government newly established mobile traffic air quality monitoring vehicles to be launched in May
The City Government implemented a series of response measures to monitor air quality in Taichung, including the establishment of six real-time air quality monitoring stations, hanging high school flags for air quality, adding new “Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Vehicles,” installation of a real-time air quality monitoring website and air quality mobile information APP, etc. To further upgrade the air quality monitoring capacity, the City Government established the first “Mobile Traffic Air Quality Monitoring Vehicle” this year. Currently, vehicles and equipment have been delivered, and assembly and functional tests have been completed. Now the inspection and acceptance is being performed. They are expected to be officially launched and engaged in monitoring in May.
The Environmental Protection Bureau stated that pollution sources in Taichung City, in addition to haze from Mainland China and pollutants emitted from large factories, metropolitan mobile pollution sources such as transport exhaust emissions from large trucks, private vehicles, motorcycles, etc. are also many of the main reasons for the deterioration of air quality
The Environmental Protection Bureau noted that Mayor Lin Chia-lung had proposed the idea of establishment of “Mobile Traffic Air Quality Monitoring Vehicle” last year. He hoped that through the mobile monitoring for arterial traffic in urban areas, air quality conditions on main roads could be controlled as a reference for the Environmental Protection Bureau and Transportation Bureau to formulate mobile source control strategies.
Environmental Protection Bureau Director Hung Cheng-Chung indicated that the supplementary budget was issued last year for establishment of monitoring vehicles according to Mayor Lin’s view. Currently, vehicles and equipment have been delivered, and assembly and functional tests have been completed. Now the inspection and acceptance is being performed. They are expected to be officially launched and engaged in monitoring in May. The monitoring will be performed first on Taiwan Boulevard and Zong Qing Road with heavy traffic flow, and monitoring data would be analyzed in cooperation with academic institutions for the future. Analysis reports will also be published on the Internet for full disclosure of information.
The Environmental Protection Bureau pointed out that, compared to “Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Vehicles,” the functions of “Mobile Traffic Air Quality Monitoring Vehicles” are more diversified and complete. Through their internal monitoring instruments, the volatile organic compound, pollutants such as BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene), fine suspended particles, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons produced by vehicles can be resolved. In addition, the aerosol composition monitor and heavy metals (as a total of 22 kinds, such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, etc.) continuous monitoring equipment are additionally installed to make monitoring data complete.
Before the monitoring vehicles are officially launched in May, the Environmental Protection Bureau will organize an awarded article solicitation for naming and auto body painting. Activity contents will be announced in the near term. We welcome all citizens to participate and together make contributions to environmental protection.
