Taichung City’s 58th City Athletics Meet held its opening ceremony on September 13 with Mayor Jason Hu at the helm. The three-day event (September 13-15) commenced officially, with 118 units and 1603 athletes taking part in the competitions. Mayor Hu wished everyone all the best.

This year’s ceremonial flame was lit at Taichung city’s Confucius Temple at 8am on September 13. Accompanied by XuangXi Junior High School’s musical performance, deputy Mayor Xiao lit the ceremonial flame, passed it to a member of the track and field team, who then ran along JinNan Street and SanMin Road to pass it onto a member of the senior members; the flame was then carried along SanMin Road and MinQuan Road up to the City Government Building, where it was handed to a city government Class 1 Management Official. The flame was carried further along ZiYou Road, ZhongShan Park, and then handed to the City Council; city councilors carried it along ZhiYou Road, LiXing Road then back to the gymnasium. The head of the senior members committee, also a long distance runner, brought the ceremonial flame in, finally handing it over to national competition gold medallists Zhang Jia-Wei and Xie Yi-Lun to light the ceremonial flame.
