To respond to Earth Day, Taichung City government today (4/20) at 9pm held “Mountain cleaning from 5 paths of Dakeng trails; Decrease carbon, lose weight and protect the Earth” at Dakeng Jingbuku parking lot. People were led by Qi Wen-Zhong, the director of Transportation Division, and Lee Li-De, the Director of Bureaus of Environmental Protection, in 6 separate teams to proceed with the mountain cleaning activity and contribute to the efforts of environmental protection of the Earth. 

Division of Transportation and Bureau of Environmental Protection co-held “Mountain cleaning from 5 Dakeng trails paths of” with Taichung City Environmental Protection Mountaineers Association, Taichung City Touke Mountaineers Association, offices of Heping Village, Dakeng Village, and Junkung Village. The teams would start from No. 6 to No. 10 Hiking Trail and clean the mountain from five different paths including DakengNo.6~No.10 Hiking Trails, Kungxi alley and the surrounding areas. The content of the activity includes a mountain cleaning flag ceremony, decreasing carbon (planting trees), losing weight（cleaning the mountain）and recycling. The organizer prepared cleaning tools such as clamps, trash bags, etc., and a vegetarian buffet for people to enjoy. At the same time, they also responded to the appeal for environmental protection and self-prepared tableware, and gave away a promotional gift to everyone who joined this mountain cleaning activity.

The Transportation Division of Taichung city government said that Dakeng was the backyard garden of Taichung City. Many citizens who liked mountain climbing come here often to walk a walk in their leisure time. However, because of a few people, who lack civism, the originally clean, fresh and attractive paths of the mountain have trash on the paths, which caused people to lose interest; it is not supposed to be there. This time, the city hall combined the power of civil groups and co-held this mountain cleaning activity in the hope of appealing to people to love and protect Taichung, to love and protect Taiwan, to love and protect the Earth and stop destroying the environment and work together for a fresh and wonderful environment.

The Division of Transportation said that Earth Day was initiated by USA senator Mr. Gaylord Nelson on April 22nd, 1970, and positioned it as the Earth Day environmental protection activity. Many environmental groups were established, one after another, and actively joined to protect the ecological environment of the Earth. Taiwan has been participating in this activity since 1990, and now it has become an international activity, which is a non-profitable, non-governmental, non-political activity and initiated by citizens to rescue the Earth. The focus of the activity is to address that all people on the Earth can do something to protect the Earth under the principle of not violating the essence of the Earth Day.
