Taichung City Bus: Top 1 Market Share and Satisfaction of the 5 Municipal Cities

Since June 2011, Taichung City Government executed “Love Bus i384 for My Journey” project and is the pioneered city to implement bus charge by distance (free for journey within 8km and the ceiling price is NTD60) and 4-in-1 card (Taiwan Smart Card, Easy Card, Kaohsiung MRT Card, and ETC). The public transportation in Taichung is well developed that the market share of public transportation and the satisfaction rate of 2010 to 2012 was the top among the 5 municipal cities.

According to the survey (as shown in the chart) of conducted by Statistics Department, Ministry of Transportation, the market share of public transportation of Taichung among the 5 municipal cities in 2012 was 8.2%, ranking as the 3rd, after Taipei at 38% with abundant governmental resource and New Taipei City at 27%, but higher that Kaohsiung at 7.2% even with the MRT construction and Tainan City at 4.9%. However, the figure of Taichung increased by 1.4% each year from 2010 to 2012, which was higher than the others. In addition, the satisfaction rate of Taichung public transportation was 91.5% in 2012, only after Taipei at 91.8%.

The Bureau expressed that the implementation of “Love Bus i384 for My Journey” was highly evaluated and has great impact on improving Taichung traffic and environmental quality. Until now, the routes are increased from 71 to 189 travelling in all the areas in the Greater Taichung, shifts increased from 130,000 to 230,000 per month, and the passengers increased from 3.08 million to 8.77 million. The great performance is the top of the nation. In addition, after the Greater Taichung was merged, it reached the goal to offer bus routes in all district within 8 months to provide a more convenient public transportation service to the public.
