The Fire Bureau of the Taichung City Government held the naming campaign from January 24 for one month. Mayor Lin Chia-lung invited all people in Taiwan to give nice Chinese names to the three Labrador Retriever search and rescue dogs, Gore, Grace, and Hill in Taichung City. People were quite enthusiastic about the naming campaign, and there were total 583 names collected. The members of the Evaluation Commission included the Fire Bureau Deputy Director Tseng Chin-Tsai, three Fire Bureau’s dog handlers, professional reporters, and full-time professors of Department of Chinese Language and Literature chose names for dogs today (the 2nd day of the month) and finally picked five names for each search and rescue dog. Internet voting got started from the 7th day for the month to choose best Chinese names.
The Chinese name “Hei Pi” stood out for the black male dog, Gore. Gore’s younger sister, Grace was a yellow female dog, and Chinese names “Ssu Ssu” and “Si Si” picked for her. The yellow male dog Hill had an outstanding record of performance during the training session. There was one person name him “Lung Pao,” and the judges considered it nice, decent, and lovely. People’s eyes widened at the sight. Other selected names included “Tu Mi,” “Hei Hsiung,” “Tieh Hsiung,” and “Tu Pi.”
After several rounds of voting and discussions, the members of the Evaluation Commission had chosen five nice names for three search and rescue dogs and entered the third stage, i.e. Internet voting.
