Last night (17th), North Taichung saw its first carbon monoxide poisoning accident since the beginning of winter this year. The two patients have been transported to China Medical University Hospital for treatment and observation, and are out of immediate danger. An investigation by the municipal fire department concluded that the accident was a result of carbon monoxide accumulation in the house caused by an incomplete combustion of natural gas from outdoor water heaters because of closed balcony doors and windows due to the cold. The fire department reminds people to keep surroundings well ventilated because the chances of prolonging gas heater use increase during cold weather and consecutive holidays with family reunions.
The fire department states that as the weather turns cold beginning from the14th with the first wave of southbound cold air this year, many people are used to shutting doors and windows causing poor indoor ventilation.
