中市發生入冬第一起一氧化碳中毒 消防局籲使用熱水器保持環境通風
Last night (17th), North Taichung saw its first carbon monoxide poisoning accident since the beginning of winter this year. The two patients have been transported to China Medical University Hospital for treatment and observation, and are out of immediate danger. An investigation by the municipal fire department concluded that the accident was a result of carbon monoxide accumulation in the house caused by an incomplete combustion of natural gas from outdoor water heaters because of closed balcony doors and windows due to the cold. The fire department reminds people to keep surroundings well ventilated because the chances of prolonging gas heater use increase during cold weather and consecutive holidays with family reunions.
The fire department states that as the weather turns cold beginning from the14th with the first wave of southbound cold air this year, many people are used to shutting doors and windows causing poor indoor ventilation. The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is high if combined with improper installment or use of gas heaters.
Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, and symptoms of poisoning are hard to detect. If multiple members of the family simultaneously experience symptoms similar to a cold or food poisoning, such as fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and weak limbs, one should be alert to possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Gas heaters still running should be turned off, and doors and windows should be opened for ventilation. If you are experiencing serious discomfort, please go outdoors to a well circulated environment, and then call 119 for help.
The fire department calls for a self-checks on gas heater location safety installment in the house. To avoid the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, the “Five Musts” principle of home installation should be strictly complied, including keeping the environment ventilated, using a heater with a qualified label, choosing the correct model, attending to safe installation and regular checkups. If you are concerned about gas heater safety at home, you may call 119 directly for the fire department “Anti-carbon Feng Shui master” service. Staff will be dispatched to your residence for security inspection of gas heaters.
