After the dredging construction of the pond, not only the quality water of the pond has improved, 4,000 tons of flowing water is also recharged daily from Hanxi Lake to maintain its quality. Now, not only fishes are swimming in the pond, the crowd of people has also returned. Mayor Lin stated that this year is important for Taichung, as both Taichung Station and the Second Market will celebrate their hundred-year anniversary and this is also the 100th year of the Seven Mazu Festival at Wan Chuen Temple. The Taichung City Government will hold a series of events to celebrate and commemorate the past history of this city. Looking towards the future, he expects to work hard with the citizens and make Taichung a livable city and the capital of life.
The Construction Bureau stated, due to the fact that Sun Moon Pond is a closed pond, its major source of water comes from rain water and underground water. With the total water volume of 18,000 tons, it takes about 900 days for the water of Sun Moon Pond to circulate once. Given that only a limited amount of water is being recharged into the lake, the pond-bottom mud that has not been cleaned for years, and droppings from fish, turtles, ducks, geese and other organisms, the pond water suffered severe eutrophication, causing the water to become filthy and give off a peculiar smell.
Director Huang Yu-lin of the Construction Bureau stated that the city government conducted the largest scale of dredging construction of the Sun Moon Pond since October 2016 and dredged around 4,706 m3 of pond mud. Besides dredging, enclosure construction was also conducted around Sun Moon Pond so that animal droppings can be gathered and purified before finding its way back into the pond. Two wells were dug to pump 2,000 tons of water daily. Also, around 4,000 tons of flowing water from Hanxi Lake can be recharged into Sun Moon Pond, allowing its circulation to occur more quickly. He hopes that through this construction, Taichung Park can be transformed into a world-class tourist attraction.
