For the public to approach the rich cultures of Taichung, the Taichung Cultural Affairs Bureau set up a “Taichung studies” section in 28 Taichung districts libraries, collecting related works on the history, culture, and livelihood of Taichung. Mayor Lin Chia-Lung expects Taichung residents to have closer link with the land and the history/culture developed through "reading Taichung".
The Taichung Studies Section launch press conference was held on the 14th at Taichung Public Library Dadu branch. Mayor Lin, Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Wang Chih-Cheng, City Public Library Director Chang Xiao-ling, Dadu District Director Chen Jia-rong, city councilor Chang Ya-min, Legislators Yen Kuan-Heng service office representative, Council Speaker Lin Shih-chang service office representative, councilors Liu Shu-lan, Chen Shih-kai, Wu Chiung-hua service office representative and writer Liu Ka-shiang were present to join the event, giving witness to the establishment of a “Taichung Studies” section in greater Taichung libraries.
Mayor Lin stated that Taichung cultural city library is a community space for citizens to cultivate one’s mind and interact. 28 libraries simultaneously initiated the “Taichung Studies” section, collecting all genres of Taichung studies related volumes in hopes that the citizens may gain through reading about Taichung a deeper comprehension of this land, the historical cultural once nurtured on this point on the map and creating an affectionate bond with this land.
In addition, Mayor Lin also pointed out that the total amount of books borrowed by Taichung citizens broke through ten million last year, which is a growth of around 16%. The city government continues to hold book clubs, cultural discussions to promote reading, and is carrying on with library space renovation, in the hopes of creating public spaces that citizens are fond of visiting. Five "Taichung Studies" works were published last year, with five more planned for this year. Citizens who enjoy reading or writing are encouraged to interact through the various topics presented by "Taichung Studies", in hopes of excavating the city’s very many wonderful stories together and passing them on.
Writer Liu Ka-shiang says that after recent readings of the book “My Century”, he associated “Taichung Studies” with the century of Taichung. It is accomplished through a prolong accumulation of culture in successive links. He believes and expects there to be more Taichung Studies books in the future, slowly progressing and exerting influence, promoting toward every county and city of Taiwan, even to other countries.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau states that the Taichung Studies section is derived from the context of “Taichung Studies Books”, with contents focusing on Taichung politics, economy, society and educational culture. They include descriptions of the Dadu Pingpu Tribe Legend, father of Taiwan choir Lu Chuan-sheng biography and collected works, Taichung cake culture and related works. Each library branch will also host Taichung Studies related promotions. For example “Journey of the Cake on Palette”, “The rebel, labor and writing of Yang Kui”, “Taiwanese in the military community: My Father is an Old Mainlander”, “My Family loves Suncake”, and several lectures to guide participants in understanding and experiencing the profound intrinsic of Taichung.
Taichung Public Library also indicates that they are actively integrating local characteristics. Taiping Pinglin branch will invite writer Li Yi-fan to share on the 18th “Discussions on Local Family Writings from Old Taichung City”. Huludun Branch is also holding a theme book exhibition on Matsu. Plentiful community walking and reading activities includes the “Taiwan 136 County Highway Earth God Temple Exploration”, “Walking and Reading Daya Wheat Scent Breeze”, “Painting Maple Community Scenery-Jute Culture”, etc.
In addition, there are 59 book clubs this year with selected readings on Taichung Studies books this year. Over 100 sessions of club sharing are estimated, and in response to the internet digital era, Taichung Public Library will establish Taichung Studies on the HyRead E-book platform in sync. There are currently over 40 related eBooks in collections and will continue in adding diverse contents echoing its physical counterpart.
