Kids'N Fun Festival kicks off – Mayor Lin hopes to launch Taiwanese culture onto the international stage

The 8th Kids'N Fun Festival was held in Cupertino, California on August 13 (Taiwan Time), and students from Guang Zheng Elementary School in Wufeng District, Taichung City were invited to present a lion dance and battle drum performance. Their thunderous, magnificent performance received a spirited round of applauds from the appreciative audience. According to Mayor Lin, conducting cultural interaction through the Kids'N Fun Festival is not only conducive for the children’s development but also helps to launch Taiwanese culture globally. He expects that it will also strengthen friendly ties with the City of Cupertino, in turn fostering diverse collaborations.

“Taiwanese Cultural and Sports Association (TCSA)” hosted the Kids'N Fun Festival at Cupertino Memorial Park on the 13th (Taiwan time). Inspired by the theme of “Imagination, Innovation and Love”, there were numerous folkgame booths and dazzling cultural performances by children from different countries that attracted a large number of parents and their kids. Dignitaries including Taichung City Mayor Chia-lung Lin, Cupertino Mayor Savita Vaidhyanathan and founder of TCSA Frank Hong all turned up for the event.

Mayor Lin commented that Taichung City and Cupertino are friendly cities, thus for this Kids'N Fun Festival, students from Guang Zheng Elementary School in Taichung City were invited to give a lion dance and battle drum performance. Cultural exchange among children is not only conducive for their development but also helps to launch Taiwanese culture globally.

According to Mayor Lin, Taichung and Cupertino holds various collaborative relationships; besides sending delegates to participate in Kids'N Fun Festival, educational exchanges are also carried out. For instance, in addition to visiting each other’s schools, international education in the form of transnational elective curricula is also implemented, where the “American Technology and Culture” course is held to strengthen bilateral relations.

Mayor of Cupertino Savita Vaidhyanathan suggested that Kids'N Fun Festival is able to bridge the distance between cities, states or even countries. She thanked Mayor Lin for visiting Cupertino with his staff and for bringing the fabulous lion dance. She was also expressed that she was immensely impressed with the performance and hoped to foster more opportunities for cooperation and interaction.

Furthermore, in reinforcing the friendship between the two cities, Mayor Lin invited the Mayor of Cupertino to attend Taichung World Flora Expo next year, to which she replied she will definitely visit if the opportunities arise.

Hsiu-feng He, a student from Guang Zheng Elementary School said that in preparation for the performance in the US, they had practiced for a month and half. Despite feeling nervous on the stage, they strived to complete their performance in hopes of showcasing Taiwan’s arts and culture internationally. Another student Chun-yen Huang expressed that he felt happy and honored to be able to perform in the US, and the greatest reward of this journey is to become acquainted with different cultures around the world.

According to the Education Bureau, Taichung City Government, Kids'N Fun Festival is held by TCSA every summer vacation at the Cupertino Memorial Park. Funding for the event is provided by TCSA founder Frank Hong and his wife every year, and the event is supported by nearly 600 international volunteers.

This year, the event features 130 booths divided into different areas such as: playground, gourmet food area, international cultural village, drone area, scientific folkgame area, children’s game village etc. In particular, the international cultural village includes cultural relics and performances from Vietnam, India, Mexico, Israel, Italy, South Africa and Thailand. A variety of games were also design for children.
