Mayor Lin Expects Human Rights Education Act after the Holocaust History Museum Visit

With the arrangement by International Mayors Conference, yesterday (12) Mayor Lin made a visit with other city mayors to the Holocaust History Museum. Mayor Lin indicated that, Israel has the history of the holocaust during WWII recorded, studied and opened to public, allowing the world to think as a reminder; for Taiwan, to compensate the activities during White Terror such as the 228 and the Martial Law Period, <<Transitional Justice Promotional Act>> has been approved. Towards world peace, further effort including drawing up and practice of Human Rights Education Act are urged to prevent the histories from reoccurring.

Together with other participating mayors, Mayor Lin visited the Holocaust History Museum yesterday. Through documentaries, exhibition of virtual images, historical photos and the collections donated from the survivors, the dark history of holocaust during WWII is deeply learned and prayed upon for world peace.

Mayor Lin indicated that, as mournful as the historical event is, it is the significant educational meaning of how the transitional justice that brings us to reflect the event upon the records, studies and exhibition of the history by the Israel government.

Mayor Lin said that similar history not only existed during WWII, but throughout many countries where the government abused people’s life, families and everything with national violence. In Taiwan, the <<Transitional Justice Promotional Act>> has just been approved, and it would be a great reference to learn from the rule of law established and the effort done by Israel and many European countries as well as American countries.

Mayor Lin talked about the oral history of white terror gradually constructed by city government and the expansion of the Freedom of Speech from February 28 to April 7 to human rights cultural season in order to promote human rights education as it is important to bring our future generation to realize, reflect and avoid the mistakes from the history.

In addition, the city government expects to implant the human rights education in school yards and the central government to draw up an act accordingly, further rooting the value into everyone.

Mayor Lin further said that, the visit today is a travel back in time to sense the trial for humanity at the time of the disaster. There is a motivation in the event that helps Taiwan going towards transitional justice. Efforts should be made from all respects to prevent the repetition of such suffering on earth.

The Holocaust History Museum is built by the officials by act of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) in remembrance of the genocide of 6 millions of Jews by the Nazi.

The prism-like triangular structure of the museum adopted from half of the hexagram of the national flag, with the other half indicating the missing Jew victims. The hallway is designed from up to down, then goes up again, signifying the route from brightness to darkness, and returning to brightness in the end.
