Harsher Punishment on Illegal Wastewater Discharge

  • Date: 2018-04-28
  • Issued by: Environmental Protection Bureau

Several major environmental pollution incidents have occurred recently. The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) of Executive Yuan has amended some provisions of the "Water Pollution Control Act" and promulgated them on February 4, 2015. The penalties and sanctions on illegal business operators are changed from “consecutive punishment by day" to "consecutive punishment by times"; the maximum fines (to such illegal acts as excessive discharge of wastewater, diversion of discharge flow, illegal dilution, insufficient wastewater and sewage treatment facility, and inability to maintain normal operation of wastewater and sewage treatment facility) are increased to NT$ 20 million; and the fines on real-term pollution violation are raised tenfold.

The Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) of Taichung City Government said that the penalty fines and interest income will be specifically used for there mediation of the environment damaged by the irregularities. To encourage people to report illegal activities, the EPB has also drafted rules for incentive payments.

The EPB calls upon traders to comply with the new laws and regulations for wastewater treatment. Citizens are urged to report any relevant wrongdoing to the EPB (24-hour report hotline: 04-22291747 or toll-free hotline 0800-066666).
