Representatives of Taichung Bakery Association (TBA) visited Taichung City Mayor, Jason Hu on the 13th to thank the Mayor for his efforts to promote sun cake and TBA present the Mayor with a ribbon written “Best Spokesman for Sun Cake”. During his visit to Beijing to attend the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Council meeting, Mayor Hu brought 120 boxes of the famous sun cake and pineapple cake of Taichung City as gifts for delegates from all over the world. He also held press conferences and accepted interviews to promote the suncake of Taichung. These moves have made suncake of Taichung a world-famous pastry. Led by You-yi You, chairman of TBA, representatives of TBA presented the ribbon written “Best Spokesman for Sun Cake” to the City Mayor and thanked the Mayor for his efforts to make sun cakes known to the world during his visit to Beijing. According to Mayor Hu, after the press conference, a local resident on the street asked if he was “Mayor Hu” who promoted sun cakes on TV and the person was interested to taste some sun cakes. Apart from holding the press conference to promote suncake, Mayor Hu also accepted interviews from Phoenix TV, CCTV and China Radio to talk about sun cakes of Taichung. As the interviews were broadcasted to every part of China, tens of millions of people in China now know about sun cakes of Taichung. The annual sales volume of sun cakes in Taichung is about NT$1 billion, Mayor Hu pointed out. He hoped after the promotion activities in mainland China, tourists from mainland China would be attracted to Taichung City to buy sun cakes. In the future, it is also possible to export sun cakes to mainland China and the international market and the goal is to have an annual sales volume of NT$1 5 billion. Following Mayor Hu’s effort to make sun cakes of Taichung known to the world, the City Government and TBA have made plans to establish an authentication system to control the quality of sun cakes and prevent fake sun cakes from entering the market and destroying the reputation. If every tourists from mainland China want to purchase a box of sun cakes, merchants in Taipei and Kaohsiung would also start to sell sun cakes and they may even use such marketing skills as “buy one get two free” to attract customers. Hence, the best way to ensure the rights of the merchants and consumers is to establish an authentication system.
