During the public security committee report on July 21, Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu expressed that the Taichung City Police Bureau Commissioner Yeh Kun-Fu has worked hard to reduce the number of criminal cases to below 4500 among every 10,000 people in the year 2005. This is the best result in ten years. Mayor Hu also announced a letter of gratitude to the Taichung City Police Bureau from the citizens of Taichung, thanking the police for such great improvements in their service attitude towards the general public in the last few years; and also encouraging the police to continue their efforts in strengthening their service towards the public.
Mayor Hu expressed that most outsiders are under the impression that Taichung’s public safety is not very good, because for many years, Taichung has had the highest number of criminal cases per 10,000 people in the whole country. However, through the hard work of the police, since Mayor Hu’s began his office, the number has been successfully decreasing. In 2002, the number was 5055, in 2003, it was down to 4776, in 2004 it was 4953, and in 2005, between January and April, the number was 1515. If this number is maintained for the rest of the year, the number for 2004 should be around 4545. And Mayor Hu expressed that Commissioner Yeh will try his best to lower the number to 4500, and create the best result in the last ten years.
Mayor Hu also pointed out that the percentage of criminal cases that have been solved in Taichung city was 49.8% in 2002, 50.3% in 2003, and 51.1% in 2004. During the meeting, Mayor Hu also expressed that according to the population of Taichung, this city should have 5100 policemen, but at the moment, there are only 2486 policemen. He believes that such an achievement is not easy and was only possible through the committed efforts of all the policemen.
