Intercontinental Cup Successfully Closed; See You All in Taichung for World Cup Baseball 2007(2006-11-21)

The 16th Intercontinental Cup came to a close after 11 days of exciting games of baseball. The closing ceremony was held at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium on November 19th at 10:30pm. The champion for the XVI Intercontinental Cup is Cuba. The Netherlands, Taiwan and Japan are second, third and forth place respectively. 

The ceremony included a fresh and energetic performance of Chinese traditional drums by the students of Chun-an Elementary school, which won huge applause from the audience. During the ceremony, Deputy Mayor, James Chia-chi Hsiao of Taichung, representing Mayor Jason Hu, commemorated Peng, Cheng-hao, the chairman for Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA) with the Honorary Citizen of Taichung Award, and thanked him for actively pursuing to have the XVI Intercontinental Cup in Taichung. It could not have been done without his hard work.

Deputy Mayor Hsiao mentioned that even though Mayor Hu and his wife were involved in a car accident in the evening on the 18th, municipal affairs and the baseball games are still on his mind. His determination to hold the 2007 Baseball World Cup and Asia Cup Baseball in Taichung never wavered. Mayor Hu wanted to thank International Baseball Federation, CTBA, and other organizations for helping to make this year’s Intercontinental Cup a successful event. He would also like to thank all the participating teams. The fans really got a kick out of their passionate performances.

CTBA's Chairman Peng, Cheng-hao expressed his sorrow regarding the accident that Mr. and Mrs. Hu were involved in the night before, and wished them a speedy recovery. He also thanked Taichung City Government for its cooperation in organizing the 11-day event with 36 games. Chariman Peng also announced that he will see everyone again in November next year, at the Baseball World Cup in Taichung.

Today, Taiwan began its fight for 3rd place against Japan at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. In the end, amidst fans' loud cheers, Team Taiwan stepped up to the challenge and ended up beating Japan 4-0 to take the bronze medal.

At 6:30 pm, The Netherlands and Cuba began their quest for the championship. Both teams were evenly matched and the game went into overtime. In the 11th inning, Cuba turned up its offense and scored 3 points in a row. At the end, Cuba defeated the Netherlands 6-3 and won the championship.
