Race Instead of Drag Racing. The First OVAL Motorbike Race Kicks Off in Taichung. (2008-08-03)

The Honda Scooter Criterium kicked off in the parking lot southeast of Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium on August 3rd after an opening ceremony hosted by Deputy Mayor Hsiao. Participants from all over Taiwan gathered there to display their driving prowess on the 200 meter race track. The battle ensued with motorbikes nearly touching the ground to the astonishment of the audience who applauded in appreciation of the impressive driving.

Deputy Mayor Hsiao mentioned that the Criterium would be a warm up for the Asian Auto Gymkhana Championship held in Taichung City, as well as the first OVAL race. In addition, he called for motorbike drivers to drive safely, as the race was intended to allow an outlet in place of drag racing. The safety of self and others should be a top priority.

Kymkahana is a small race field that requires controlled driving instead of speed. There are a number of activities built around the main event, including audience participation, cuisine, and car modification, comprising a festival for car racing enthusiasts. The additional activities are intended to enhance the attraction of Kymkahana and promote the tourist industry in Taichung. TCMSA will continue the event in future and be devoted to education of anti-street racing, as well as tourism development in Taiwan.
