In celebration of International Car Free Day, Taichung City Government held “Taichung’s new ride race; International Car Free Day” to encourage bicycle riding, on September 21. The city planned route for this bicycle riding event followed Huan Zhong Road, passing under the Taichung-Zhanghua Expressway, which was closed for the first time. About 5 thousand bicycle-lovers joined this activity, including Taichung Deputy Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi, whose whole family participated in the event. He said that the phenomenon of so many people getting up early to ride bicycles proved that Taichung is indeed a young and healthful Lohas city.
The event and activities for “Taichung’s new ride race; International Car Free Day” was hosted by the Taichung City Government and began at Taichung Specific Football Field at 6 a.m. on September 21. This event marked the first time that major roadways were closed for an activity, five thousand bicycle riders and skilled inline skaters were attracted to join this event. Various bicycles vied with each other for glamour, and business groups were distinct by their marks. The city’s energy and health were fully expressed.
Taichung Deputy Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi said that riding a bicycle would help to achieve becoming fit through exercise; and more importantly, futher efforts in environmental protection of the Earth. If everyone walked outdoors and used less electronic appliances, the goal of energy saving and reduction of co2 emissions would be fulfilled, and thus was very pleased to see so many people get up early to join in the Car Free Day activity, which shows that Taichung is a happy and healthful Lohas city. He hoped that such understanding and participative spirit will be continuously extended, making Taichung City a model city nationwide.
In addition to bicycle riding there where numerous other activities, including aerobic dancing by members of the California Fitness Center and technical bicycle performances by Bear Bike, little painters also brought their works to show energy and spirit. In addition, activities for a Prize-giveaway Quiz were held by the Civil Service Ethics Office and Tax Bureau of Taichung City Government, which attracted a great deal of interest.
A star attraction was the “Riding for Drawing Lucky Lots”, with numerous prizes, such as Giant Bicycles, MERIDA Bicycles, membership of California Fitness Center, BenQ 42 inch LCD TV, admission tickets for two-persons by Evergreen Laurel Hotel (Taichung), etc. The crowd was full of anticipation during the draw and many prize winners smiled happily, stating that it is great to exercise, win prizes, and take another bike home.
