Satsuki Rhododendron and Peony Exhibition

Sponsored by the Agricultural Bureau of Taichung City Government, the Xinshe District Farmers' Association and Taichung City Satsuki Association will hold the 2014 Rhododendron Exhibition at the atrium of Yangming Building of Taichung City Hall (No. 36, Yangming Street, Fengyuan District, Taichung City) between April 4 and 13, 2014. There will be 150 pots of carefully cultivated Satsuki Rhododendron, Western Azalea, Hirado Rhododendron, and Kurume Azalea showcased in the exhibition. All flower lovers are welcome to this free show.

Introduced from Japan, the Satsuki Rhododendron is a kind of potted plant largely cultivated in the mountain areas of Taichung and in Yangmingshan of Taipei. Currently, 40,000 pots of Satsuki are cultivated in an area of over 20 hectares in Taichung City, accounting for more than 80% of such flowers in the country. "Satsuki" is a traditional name for May in Japanese. Thus, all the flowers that bloom in May are called the "Mayflower" or "Satsuki Flowers". As the weather in Taiwan is warmer than that in Japan, the Satsuki Rhododendron blooms one month earlier in Taiwan than Japan. That is to say, it blooms in April in Tawain.

In the exhibition will be also held a competition, in which exhibited rhododendrons will be rated in terms of their colors, flower and tree patterns, basin sets, and floral arrangements. In addition, there will be promotional sales of potted Satsuki rhododendrons at affordable prices together with a cultivation manual. People are encouraged to place two or three pots of Satsuki rhododendrons at home to beautify their own living environment. The exhibition will be held at the Yangming Building of Taichung City Hall in Fengyuan District. People who like potted flowers should not miss the opportunity to appreciate the Satsuki blooms.
