Flora Expo Houli Area is welcoming Taiwan’s first Circular Building “Holland Hall”

Flora Expo Houli Area is welcoming Taiwan’s first Circular Building “Holland Hall”. Built by 4 Dutch corporates and Taisugar, the building, after FLORA EXPO, will be torn down and its material return to the market for reuse. This will be the world’s first circular building completes its course of use-tear-reuse, and is a great exhibition for environment friendly architecture concept in Taiwan, says TAICHUNG CITY GOVERNMENT.

On behalf of city government, at Taipei JUT Hall, Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-ying introduced the “Holland Hall” in the upcoming FLORA EXPO, joined by EPA Deputy Minister Zhang Zi-jing, Guy Wittich, the Representative, Netherlands Trade & Investment Office in Taiwan, Taisugar Chairman Huang Yu-zheng, and representatives from 4 Dutch corporates.

Almere, Holland, will have 2022 Floriade in the city. Taichung City Mayor Lin Chia-lung visited the city the year before and invited Almere Mayor Franc Weerwind to come to Taichung FLORA EXPO, signed a memorandum over the inter-participation of the flora event in 2018 and 2022, as well as collaboration, resources and information exchange over economy, trade, education, natural sciences, agricultural technology, flower industry, etc., says Deputy Mayor.

“Holland Hall” is built with nearly 100% of recyclable materials provided and established by Netherlands Office in Taiwan, suppliers, architects, banks, central government, local governments, research institutions from Netherlands and Taiwan, says Wittich. In the process there will be opportunities, challenges that will speed up the implementation of Circular Building in Taiwan.

He further explained that the team will work with TCRI (Taiwan Construction Research Institute) to create a database that records every material for future share with other users, for now the Holland Hall will serve as a material bank storing these components. In addition, the architecture will be the world first circular building that dissembled after use in April, 2019, the closing of FLORA EXPO.

The Holland Hall will display new technology and modes of circular economy applied in Taisugar and the four major companies in Holland. Taisugar Chairman Huang mentioned that the indoor flooring, doors, windows and furniture that made of wood came from the Pier 2 Dayong sugar warehouse built in 1949. The reuse of the material connects Taisugar’s history to the world, allowing timbers and unoccupied spaces turn into a key display platform for circular economy.

The four key corporates, AkzoNobel, Signify, ING and DSM, will display their own circular products/solutions to Taiwan for demonstration and implementation.

AkzoNobel, the world’s largest company of coating and paints, is bringing coating product “PAC-CLAD" applied to the rooftop of Holland Hall to bring down the roof temperature by 10 degrees and 5 degrees indoor. Signify supports the Hall with free Philips lighting, promoting “light” rather than lighting equipment.

Selected the most sustainable bank on earth by Global Finance in 2017, ING Bank joined Holland Hall to provide professional assistance as a partner towards circular economy with Taiwanese Government and the industries. While DSM, the material company named by Forbes the world’s number two “world changing” company, will contribute the world’s first recyclable carpet “Niaga” to Taiwan.

As per EPA Deputy Minister, this June a “Green Deal” based on the same project in Holland is signed by corporates and public sections to create a win-win between economy development and green development. The circular building in Taiwan brought by Holland Office will contribute certain experiences for future circulation economy in Taiwan.
