Accompanied by the chairman of Taichung City's West District Rotary Club, Mr. Lin Han-Zhong, visiting group from the International Rotary Club R17960 (North Carolina, USA) and their leader Owen George met with Mayor Jason Hu on March 20th at the Taichung City Government offices. Mayor Hu, leader Owen George, members Linda Whitlow, Christine Kreider and Gayle Taylor had an enjoyable time discussing the cultural differences between American and Taiwanese students. They also made a visit to the National Taichung First Senior High School that afternoon.

Team members asked Mayor Hu about the difference between Taiwanese and American students, and about the trend of Taiwanese students studying overseas. Mayor Hu replied that Taiwanese students tend to be more obedient than American students. They spend most of their time studying, attending cram schools and extra-curricular activities such as singing, dancing and school groups; not so many students take part in community activities. As for studying abroad, those who do so seem to be getting younger and younger. Team leader Owen also asked Mayor Hu that, as a mayor, what are the biggest problems for the city that he has to tackle? Mayor Hu replied that financial problems are the most difficult, he also pointed out that Taichung City's financial situation has been improving steadily. However, in order to make Taichung City a better place, more improvements need to be made, this requires a stable financial situation to support it, without it, it would simply be impossible.
