In an effort to fight crime, maintain public safety and cope with their ever-increasing workload, the Taichung City Police Bureau has invested over NT$100 million in setting up a computerized policing system. On the morning of March 28, Mayor Hu and several VIPs were present at the official launching ceremony.

Mayor Hu first expressed his gratitude towards the City Council for their support of the police, he also expressed that through the combined efforts of the City Government and the City Council this NT $100 million worth policing system has finally been launched to help assist the police with their work. Mayor Hu also pointed out that since the City Government set up road side surveillance systems in 2002, the number of crimes solved between the year 2001 and 2005 increased from 29 to 143, and the number of criminals apprehended increased from 29 to 175. This is an indication that roadside surveillance systems have an effect on solving and preventing crime. Mayor Hu also encouraged police officers to make good use of the system and show positive results for all the see, and let citizens experience that Taichung’s public safety is improving.

The Police Bureau expressed that the computerized policing system is a combination of all the newest technology. Crimes that have been reported are automatically allocated jurisdiction, and an online system will indicate and assign police officers to the scene; information is then transmitted to patrol cars. Also, road side surveillance systems and the stolen car recognition system will be combined, so that results of stolen cars discovered can be immediately dispatched and apprehension efforts launched. This computerized policing system will help simplify the crime reporting procedure and as well as shorten the reaction time, strengthen police efforts to help fight crime more effectively and make communications from all areas more unified.
