The 23rd World Orchid Conference will be held grandly in March 2020. Taichung City Government held a presentation on the 27th. Deputy Mayor Chang Guang-yao hosted the AIPH autumn conference on behalf of Mayor Lin Chia-lung to discussed matters over with members invited from various countries. In addition to the Taichung World Flora Exposition that is going to be held next year, they are also welcomed to join the 2020 World Orchid Conference. Both occasions provide them with opportunities to experience Taiwan’s exciting and prolific culture.

The presentation on the World Orchid Conference was held at Evergreen Laurel Hotel. The attendants included Deputy Mayor Chang, Deputy Director of Crop Production Division of Agriculture and Food Agency, COA Hsu Huei-fei, Deputy Commissioner of Department of Economic Development of Taipei City Government Wang San-chung, Deputy Director-General of Agriculture Bureau of Tainan City Government Li Jian-yu, President Chen Cheng-zhong and Secretary-General Tseng Chun-pi of Taiwan Orchid Growers Association.

Deputy Mayor Chang welcomed all the members from different countries to attend the AIPH 2017 autumn conference. The World Orchid Conference is held every three years, being an important international event. With the endeavor of Taichung City Government and Taiwan Orchid Growers Association, the 23rd World Orchid Conference will be held in Taichung in 2020. He is going to lead a visiting group to Ecuador in November to receive the conference’s flag.

Deputy Mayor Chang pointed out that there will be four major themes in the 2020 World Orchid Conference, including native, conservation, diversity, and share. The event will be held jointly with the 2020 International Orchid Show held in Tainan. He would like to invite everybody to attend these two grand events to experience the prolific Taiwan culture. He also welcomed people to visit the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition to enjoy the music of the blooming flowers.

Director Chen of Taiwan Orchid Growers Association expressed that 2020 World Orchid Conference will be held in Taichung. They have worked very hard to achieve this goal. In the past, Taiwan paid more attention to industrial development. It is hoped that by sponsoring the Orchid Conference, we can integrate the conscious of environmental protection, the spirit of innovation in humanities, and the industry.

Secretary-General Tseng of Taiwan Orchid Growers Association pointed out that, there will be four major themes and five major appeals in the 2020 World Orchid Conference. The four major themes will be native, conservation, diversity, and share; and the five major appeals Orchids Conservation Project, Digital Archives Program, Elite Project, Youth Participation Project, and Golden Orchid Alliance Project. It is planned to invite members from 36 countries, with about 3,000 guests to attend the event. It is expected to promote the export sales value of orchids, and activate Taiwan’s orchid industry.

The Agricultural Bureau expressed that the goal of the World Orchid Conference is to unite the forces in the world to protect and study the endangered orchid species. And the altitudes in Taiwan differ greatly, constituting the tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, and frigid zones that provide diverse ecosystems. With excellent natural environment, it is very suitable for the growth of orchid. In Taiwan, more than 400 wild orchids have been discovered, rendering it the renowned “Orchid Island.”

Taiwan possesses ample experiences in the conservation and study of wild orchid resources. By sponsoring the World Orchid Conference, other than creating opportunities for the exchange on conservation works, it also expects the responsibility and idea to root in order to construct the platform for the development of orchid conservation.
