In protecting the safety of Taichung citizens’ lives and properties, Fire Bureau, Taichung City Government has actively promoted residential fire alarms, and 18,000 residential fire alarms were purchased for fee application and installation by the public. Priority is given to old apartments, residences of underprivileged households and inaccessible buildings without automatic fire alarms. The Fire Bureau has compiled a list for the women's fire prevention team to inspect the relevant households and install fire alarms. The public may also apply for the fire alarm at a nearby fire brigade, installation will be free of charge for qualified applicants. The Fire Bureau also encourages the public to purchase fire alarms themselves to ensure safety at home.
Residential fire alarm is able to detect smoke or high temperature during the early stages of the fire and alert the occupants with high decibel sound, increasing the amount of time available for evacuation and early response, in turn preventing unfortunate casualties.
The Fire Bureau continues to promote residential fire alarms, and 18,000 residential fire alarms were purchased for fee application and installation by the public. Priority is given to single-story house, townhouse or old apartments, residences of underprivileged households and inaccessible buildings without automatic fire alarms. For instance, elderly people living alone, people with severe disabilities, low-income households and indigenous families living in remote townships etc. In addition, other high risk venues, including residential temples, inaccessible regions, narrow alleyways, old military dependents’ villages or buildings more than 30 years old all qualify for free fire alarm installation.
Fire Bureau or women's fire prevention team will visit the homes of those included in the underprivileged group list provided by the Social Affairs Bureau, as well as houses in narrow alleyways or inaccessible regions and encourage them to install the fire alarms. Furthermore, the public may also fill out an application form at the nearest fire brigade, so that firefighters can conduct a home visit to confirm the applicant’s qualifications. Those who qualify will be entitled to the installation of one residential firm alarm free of charge.
The Fire Bureau appeal the public to purchase and install fire alarms for each independent space, such as bedroom, living room, kitchen or stairwell in order to detect fires in advance and gain precious evacuation time.
When purchasing residential fire alarms, please choose products with National Fire Agency certification laser sticker, and make sure to install the fire alarm according to the instruction manual. Fire Bureau recommends installing products that have 10-year battery life to prevent the hassle of climbing up the ceiling to change the battery every year. Moreover, smoke detectors should be installed in the bedroom and living room, while heat detectors are recommended for the kitchen due to the presence of smoke to avoid misreading.
