Taichung cares for older adults living alone, continuing to promote installation of smoke detectors and replacement of old electrical wiring

Caring for older adults who live alone! These older adults are often the most vulnerable in the event of disasters, with higher risks of injury or death, making them a high-risk group for fires. The Taichung City Government’s Fire Department has reported that 84% of the homes of elderly individuals living alone in Taichung now have smoke detectors installed. They will continue raising the awareness, as well as replacing outdated home electrical systems to further improve the safety of these older adults.
The Fire Bureau noted that, after years of effort, the average installation rate in the homes of elderly individuals living alone in Taichung City has reached 84%, with some districts achieving a 100% installation rate. However, some households still refuse visits or installations. This year, the Fire Bureau has allocated NT$3.5 million to purchase 12,500 smoke detectors, prioritizing distribution to high-risk groups such as elderly individuals living alone. They have also asked various units to follow up with those who refuse visits or installations and to ensure that neighbors or community leaders accompany them to increase the installation rate among these older adults.
The Fire Bureau remains committed to ensuring the safety of elderly individuals living alone. Since last year, they have been offering subsidies to replace old electrical systems in houses over 30 years old, aiming to improve home electrical safety. Each household can receive up to NT$25,000 in financial assistance. This year, subsidies have been granted to 204 households, with all applications completed. The process of replacing outdated wiring is currently in progress to improve the electrical systems for high-risk groups, increase electrical fire safety, and provide a safe living environment for the community.
