Tree Thieve of Precious Cypress Seized

At 07:40 am, October 2, when Chief Chen of Zhulin Police Station, Heping Precinct, Police Department of Taichung City Government (臺中市政府警察局和平分局竹林所派出所) led police officers Lin and Zhuo to check vehicles passing by the Police Station, they found a small truck carrying two segments of precious cypress, whose size was 1.31 cubic meters worth about NT$ 170,000. Our police officers immediately called the Shuangqi Work Station, Dongshih Forest District Office, Forestry Bureau (林務局東勢林區管理處雙崎工作站) to confirm the theft case and then transferred it to Taichung District Prosecutors Office for further investigation, according to the Forest Act.

After investigation, it was found that the suspect surnamed Huang spotted the precious tree stuck on the riverbed of Daan River during the hit of Typhoon Dujuan. After the typhoon, he drove a four-wheel jeep to drag the log to the river bank and cut it into two segments. On the early morning of October 2, here turned again to tow the two log segments by truck. This case has been transferred to Taichung District Prosecutors Office according to law, and the Investigation Team of Heping Precinct and the Dongshih Forest District Office of Forestry Bureau have been continuing further investigation on whether suspect Huang is also involved in other timber theft crimes.

Chen Shi-yen (陳仕諺), Director of Heping Precinct, said that the forest is an important national asset, and the police vow to strengthen the protection of precious trees. He called on the people not to defy the law, because the Heping Precinct will never let go the unscrupulous.
