Taichung City cracks down on drunk driving

Drunk driving often causes serious casualties and property losses, resulting in broken families and exorbitant social costs, hence, preventing traffic accidents has always been a goal of the police. The number of casualties in Taichung City from January to November this year (2020) is 202, a decrease of 104 compared to the same period last year (2019), equivalent to a 34% reduction. Although this indicates that the anti-drunk driving measures have been proven to be effective, with the approaching New Year, the Taichung City police will continue to crack down on drunk driving to maintain the road traffic safety of its citizens. As the year-end nears, activities such as winter solstice gathering, Christmas, New Year's Eve party and year-end banquets all involve the consumption of alcohol amid the festive atmosphere. To effectively prevent drunk driving-related accidents, the Police Department has begun preparations in advance by planning and conducting at least 10 drunk driving crackdown operations every month, as well as increasing the intensity and frequency of crackdowns along accident-prone road sections, drinking venues and surrounding roads. This is to prevent people from taking chances and to protect people's road traffic safety. The most effective way to eliminate the bad habit of drunk driving is to focus on awareness. The Police Department will continue to increase the intensity and frequency of crackdowns along accident-prone road sections during specific hours. For public venues such as restaurants, eateries or KTV bars, the police will bolster the promotion of preventive measures including a "paid designated driver service," "designated driver," and "don't drink and drive" to raise people's awareness while clamping down on drunk driving. The Taichung Police Department Commissioner Yang Yuen-Ming reminds the public that the consumption of alcoholic beverages or dishes such as ginger duck with rice wine during the year-end cold spell will impair judgment while driving, so please do not ignore the seriousness of drunk driving. He also emphasized the Police Department's determination in enforcing zero tolerance for drunk driving and urged citizens not to take their chances because the Police Department will continue to crack down on the said offense to safeguard people's road traffic safety.
