Taichung Police Strengthen Traffic Control During 228 Holiday, Urge Public to Use Public Transportation for Safe and Smooth Travel

With the upcoming 2025 Peace Memorial Day long weekend, travel demand is expected to rise as people return to their hometowns, go on trips, or attend events. To maintain traffic safety and smooth flow, the Taichung City Police Department has pre-arranged officers and volunteer traffic controllers at key locations, including Taiwan High Speed Rail stations, Taiwan Railway stations, bus stations, freeways, expressways, provincial roads used for evacuation, and popular tourist attractions, to manage traffic during peak hours.
Based on past patterns, travel on the day before the holiday (February 27), the first day (February 28), and the last day (March 2) is expected to be primarily for returning hometowns and heading back to work. Traffic control efforts will prioritize national highway interchanges, the Daya System Interchange connecting National Freeway No. 1 and ramps along Provincial Highway 74, as well as roads near train stations, tourist spots, shopping areas, and temples. The Police Department will deploy officers and volunteer traffic controllers at key intersections to manage traffic flow. From February 28 to March 2, patrols and traffic monitoring will be strengthened around shopping areas and popular attractions. Road users are encouraged to check CMS parking information to save time.
To encourage the use of public transportation during the holiday, the Highway Bureau, MOTC is offering discounts for the 2025 Peace Memorial Day long weekend. From February 27 to March 2, 90 national freeway bus routes will have discounted fares. Passengers using Taiwan High Speed Rail, Taiwan Railway, or national freeway buses can transfer to local buses within 10 hours and enjoy a basic fare or single-section fare discount. Designated “Happy Buses” will be completely free. Additionally, if the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle’s half-price e-ticket discount applies at the same time as the transfer discount, the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle discount will be applied first, followed by the transfer discount. Take advantage of these offers for a more budget-friendly holiday trip!
The Traffic Police Corps encourages residents to opt for public transportation during the holiday. Those driving into the city can download the Taichung Traffic Network app for real-time road updates and parking availability near their destinations to make their journey easier. Short- and medium-distance travelers are advised to use city roads and Provincial Highway 74, while long-distance travelers should take the freeways. This helps distribute traffic and reduce congestion. In case of traffic jams, please remain patient and follow the instructions of on-site traffic personnel to ensure safe and smooth travel.
Police Chief Li Wen-Chang urges everyone to stay responsible during the holiday, as gatherings and celebrations often involve drinking. Always remind those around you: “Never drink and drive, and don’t drive if you’re hungover the next day.” Let’s all contribute to road safety. The Police Department will maintain strict DUI enforcement, so drivers should never take any chances or attempt to evade the law.
