Set foot in the Halal market—The city government holds the first “Halal” certification orientation

To grasp the opportunity and assist the industry to obtain the “Halal” certification of “Halal food” and set foot in the Muslim market, Taichung City Government specially invited Shan Yao-Wu, the Imam of Taichung Mosque, the only department that has obtained the “Halal” certification authorized by the Malaysian government in Taiwan to be the speaker of the ‘First “Halal” certification application orientation’, today (10/21). The senior assistant, Mr. Zuhinee and his assistant Miss Waheeda of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) also assisted at the scene.

Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu indicated that he really appreciated the Malaysian government and Shan Yao-Wu, the Imam of Taichung Mosque, for sending representatives to assist at the orientation, which means they really hope to help us expand contact with the Muslim world. This July, Mayor Hu, Magistrate Huang and other coworkers went to Malaysia to market Taichung’s agricultural products, and were impressed with the progress in Malaysia and the officials’ attitudes.

Shan Yao-Wu, the Imam of Taichung Mosque, indicated that the “Halal” certification of Halal food has developed rapidly in nearby countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Taiwan shall also keep up in this field. Shan Yao-Wu, the Imam of Taichung Mosque also significantly praised Mayor Hu and indicated that Mayor Hu, who has an international perspective, saw this market and actively assisted the industry to obtain the certification. Taichung City is also the first government authority that initiated obtaining the certification in Taiwan.

The ‘First “Halal” certification application orientation’ held by the city government today explained what “Halal” certification is. It refers to “legality” in Arabic, which is also consistent with Islamic law. If it refers to food, it means “edible” food, and indicates that from the product source to terminal product, they are all in line with the strict process of Islamic doctrine. All the raw materials applied in Halal food production must be certified by Halal.

It is estimated that there are more than 1.8 billion “Muslims” in the world. Due to religious reasons, they must eat Halal food. Those who do not believe in Islam choose Halal food for hygiene, purity, and health, and therefore one in every four consumers in the world is a consumer of Halal food. Having this certification on the product package is the equivalent to having a pass in the Islamic world; the products can be endlessly exported to the Muslim world.

Internationally, corporate or government departments in Malaysia, the U.K., Canada, and the U.S.A. have promoted the Halal food certificate, in which Malaysia is the most active. The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) started to promote Halal certification in 1970. Their certification standard has been approved by the United Nations, and became the leading country of international Halal certification. Taichung Mosque is the only unit that has obtained the Malaysian government authorized certification in Taiwan.
