The trial operation period of Taichung City Chaoma Civil Sports Center from December 20th to 26th will give the public an opportunity to use the facilities for free and offer discounts on various courses before it is officially launched on December 30th . On December 7th, Lin Chia-lung, Mayor of Taichung, issued a statement during the inspection stating that this is the first completed civil sports center ready for operation in Taichung and that he hopes that it not only provides a training space for professional players but also helps develop citizens’ sporting habit, a big step forward for Taichung to become a sports city.

Today, Mayor Lin inspected facilities like the badminton court and the swimming pool and found that players might be affected by the glare of the direct light above the badminton court. He immediately asked relevant authorities to improve the situation based on professional opinions; he then personally tested the accessibility chair for convenient entry and exit of the swimming pool to make sure that the accessible facilities were well-positioned and in place.

Mayor Lin said that the opening of Chaoma Civil Sports Center means that Taichung has made a big step forward to become a sports city, hoping that it not only provides a training space for professional players but also helps develop citizens’ sporting habit.

The cost to build Chaoma Civil Sports Center is 400 million NTD. The sports center, with light orange appearance, began construction in August 2014, was completed in April 2016 and it will be officially launched on December 30th. The badminton court is 12.8 meters high with low windows on the side to avoid the glare of the sunlight affecting players’ performance. The surrounding walls were painted in dark green to be distinguished from the white badminton ball, which helps players correctly tell where the ball falls. The court is planned to become the badminton court for 2019 East Asian Youth Games (EAYG) held by the East Asian Olympic Committee.

The indoor heated swimming pool is 25 meters in length, 1.2 meters to 1.5 meters in depth and equips with Spa and sauna. The sports center provides professional sports facilities like a fitness center, aerobics classroom, spinning room, table tennis court, multi-purpose court, etc. The operator China Youth Corp has already planned plenty of diversified and affordable courses in aerobics, yoga, spinning, TRX, table tennis, badminton, martial arts, dance and sports for children. During trial operation period, the center offers discounts on various courses and admission tickets. Besides Chaoma Civil Sports Center, located on Chongde Road, Bei District, the wave-shaped Zhongzheng Civil Sports center is the largest sports center in Taichung and it will host the water sports competition in East Asian Youth Games. The project was completed in November and is expected to outsource to operators next May. Nantun Civil Sports Center has already begun construction and is expected to be completed and operate by the end of next year. Changchun, Dali and Tanzi civil sports centers will be contracted out to vendors next year. Taiping, Fengyuan and Beitun Civil Sports Center are still under serious discussion.

A multi-functional sports center next to the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium (also known as Mini Dome) will host the weight lifting competition of East Asian Youth Games. It acquired its use license this June and is ready for operation in the beginning of next year. The center along with surrounding space are planned to be part of the baseball sports and leisure park, providing a better sports environment for citizens.
