To receive 2018, the Taichung City Government (TCCG), National Taichung Theater (NTT), and National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO) co-launch the 2017 Art Carnival and the 2018 New Year Concert between mid-December, 2017 and January 1, 2018. In the 2017 Art Carnival, 12 schools and one community teams from Taichung City will give five performances, including music, dance, and drama. In the 2018 New Year Concert, celebrated domestic conductor Amy Chang designs a repertoire to correspond to the spirit of the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition by honoring the beauty of nature. Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung says, as an “eventful city” filled with comprehensive art and cultural events, Taichung City invites all to join the New Year events in Taichung.
On 28, in the company of Director-General Wang Chih-cheng of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and Director-General Peng Fu-yuan of the Education Bureau, Mayor Lin attended the NTT New Year Concert press conference. Apart from publicizing the concert in collaboration with NTT Executive and Artistic Director Victoria W.Y. Wang, NTSO Director Liu Suan-yung, and others, Mayor Lin donated about 600 tickets on behalf of TCCG to invite charities to join the concert, hoping to organize the New Year Concert in Taichung every year and make this a New Year tradition of Taichung citizens.
Mayor Lin says, as the first New Year Concert in Taichung, the 2018 New Year Concert presented by NTSO at NTT corresponds to the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition and invites citizens to listen to the sound of blooming flowers. As both NTT and NTSO are part of Taichung, it is hoped that the New Year Concert will become a tradition of Taichung City after its brand is established. In addition to the New Year’s Eve Countdown, citizens can join the New Year Concert in Taichung in the future to fill every new year with the wonder of music. Mayor Lin also praised the 2017 Art Carnival which provides performing opportunities for local art and cultural groups and the most explicit and the most direct way to cultivate art and cultural talents.
Mayor Lin adds, the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition will be held in Taichung next year. Apart from an exposition of flora and horticulture, it is a feast for soul. By integrating all Taichung art and cultural groups with art performances and visual arts and linking the World Flora Exposition with events, we present city esthetics and reawake the beauty sensibility of all citizens with such art and culture activities. Therefore, all citizens are invited.
According to NTT Executive and Artistic Director Wang, the New Year Concert co-organized by the national grade art organization and TCCG is the first of its kind in Taiwan. NTSO Director Liu also praised the efforts of TCCG to link all art and cultural activities in Taichung over the past three years for arts to connect with localization, corresponding to the policy of the Ministry of Culture. This first New Year Concert also provides a stage for local talents. He is looking forward to a wonderful performance and sharing more with citizens.
According to the Education Bureau, the 2017 Art Carnival will be held in the Grand Theater, the Playhouse, and the Black Box during December 16-24. Under TCCG planning, school teams with outstanding performance in national competitions will give performances at the carnival. It is hoped that by offering opportunities for children to stand and perform on the stage, we can inspire their esthetics awareness and let them know more about the operation of professional theaters.
The 2018 New Year Concert will be held on 1 January 2018 with celebrated conductor Amy Chang directing NTSO to accompany two international award-winning young Taiwanese classical musicians: violinist Richard Lin and pianist Chen Shih-wei. The concert entitled Self-Contentment with Pleasure to welcome the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition includes Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, and Navarro’s Libertadores to celebrate the New Year with citizens.
As tickets for some performances of the 2017 Art Carnival held during December 16-24 have been sold out, and there are not many left, the Education Bureau urges citizens to take the last chance. The onsite ticket price is NT$100. Sales of the tickets for the 2018 New Year Concert will begin on December 1. Audiences will receive a surprise grab bag on the concert day.
