Taichung Arena

Taichung Arena: A New Multi-Purpose Venue for the City

The Taichung Arena, located at the intersection of Huan Zhong Road and Rong De Road in Beitun District, covers an area of about 6.95 hectares. The project includes a main arena with four floors above ground and a secondary arena with three floors. It is designed to serve as a venue for international sports events and as a central space for cultural performances and community activities.

The main arena will have 15,500 seats and feature Taiwan’s first acoustic design that keeps sound reverberation under 2 seconds, ensuring a top-quality sound experience. The secondary arena will have 3,000 seats, making it suitable for smaller-scale events, such as performances, training sessions, and warm-ups. The two arenas will complement each other, offering flexible spaces for sports, cultural activities, and exhibitions of various sizes.

A Collaborative Effort with Local and International Expertise

The Taichung Arena is a joint effort by the Construction Bureau, Urban Development Bureau, and Sports Bureau, demonstrating effective collaboration between city departments. The design team includes Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, known for designing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium, and Taiwan’s Bio-architecture Formosana.

The design integrates the local Dajia bulrush weaving craft with modern architectural techniques, combining Taichung’s cultural identity with innovative design. This approach reflects both local traditions and a global perspective, making the arena a unique addition to the city.

Meeting Taichung’s Growing Needs

The Taichung Arena is designed to host a variety of sports and events. The main arena can accommodate ball sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, and futsal. It is also suitable for international combat sports, including fencing, wrestling, wushu, karate, judo, boxing, and taekwondo.

In addition to sports, the arena will host concerts, exhibitions, and cultural performances, providing residents with diverse leisure and entertainment options. The secondary arena will focus on smaller events and training activities, allowing flexible use of the facilities and maximizing their potential. Together, these spaces will cater to the city’s growing demand for modern venues.

Supporting Taichung’s Development

Construction of the Taichung Arena began in June 2024 and is progressing steadily. Once completed, it will serve as a world-class venue for international competitions, large-scale performances, and exhibitions. The arena will provide Taichung residents with a modern, multi-functional space for sports and cultural activities while strengthening the city’s capacity to host global events. It is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, boosting the local economy and fostering cultural exchange, ultimately enhancing Taichung’s position as a dynamic and internationally connected city.
