2018 Women Make Waves Film Festival, Taichung will be held from 31st October to 4th November at Taichung Shin Kong Cinemas.To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Women Make Waves Film Festival, the film selection of this year is more diverse than before; the opening and closing films, the French drama movie《Vagabond》and the Brazilian documentary movie《Bixa Travesty》, which cover two different generations with high creative energies. It’s expected to widen the concept and vision to accept more diverse gender differences through the film festival. Then the women’s right and interpersonal relationship will be established on more equal and respectful interactions in Taiwan. The presale ticket will be available for purchase on ibon islandwide since 2 p.m. on 9/29.

The Director of Women Make Waves Film Festival, Pecha Lo said, the films and shows of the film festival this year are much more than before and with the longest period of 5 days. There will be film trailer introductions and film guide seminars for the plentiful topics covering awarded films of Taiwan competition, the best documentary film, the images of women in Taiwanese movies and the appearances of women under the global trends etc.; both the opening and closing films are great with higher level in general than before. Everyone is welcome to join in the big event and the support from the City Government is highly appreciated to make the activity successful.

Information Bureau, the City Government, today (27th) conducted the press conference for the ticketing starting of 2018 Women Make Waves International Film Festival, Taichung. It’s hosted by Deputy Director of Information Bureau, Mei-li Lu with the Chief Executive Officer of Taichung Film Development Foundation, Ying-jhih Lin, Chairwoman of Women Make Waves Film Festival Shi-wei Chou, Director of Women Make Waves Film Festival Pecha Lo being there to support the event of Women Make Waves Film Festival in person. Besides, Legislators Hsin-chun Ho, Councilor Ya-ling Tsai, Mei-chun Ong have sent their representatives to attend the event as well. And there were some film festival trailers played on site to announce the event has been started.

Deputy Director Lu mentioned, in the past, the film is usually shot from the men’s points of view but Women Make Waves Film Festival is providing more diverse angles to allow us to see the world differently and learn more about the world; also, it shows the women’s vision and discusses about the women’s topics so the film festival not only explore the women’s body, mind and spirit but also expand to cover the aspects of human cultures, land and society. It’s expected to bring everyone the opportunity to explore more about the world we are living now.

Deputy Director Lu also mentioned, the City Government has brought the exhibition tour of Women Make Waves Film Festival to the movie theaters and cinemas for the past 3 years. Also, such a kind high quality of film shows provided in the festival allows the audience of Taichung to enjoy very much that the event will sustain continuously and be upgraded with more locally featured cinema setting to drive the audience to think more. Recently, the City Government is aggressively collaborating with the institutes to conduct different theme film festivals, including Women Make Waves Film Festival, International documentary film festival, Queer film festival, Taichung European film festival and World public television exhibition etc.; with these collaborations on the film festivals, more plentiful visual feasts will be cooked.

Chief Executive Officer Lin of Taichung Film Development Foundation pointed out, Women Make Waves Film Festival, Taichung of the year is collaborated with Taiwan Women’s Film Association again; 20 fabulous films from many countries will give the audience more diverse options and discuss the gender topics deeply. The film festival will have the shows of the ｢Taiwan Competition｣ top award in Taichung event to let the audience to enjoy. Besides, ｢Chungshan 73 film and art cultural space｣ will start to have test run by the end of October and will be operated by the Film Development Foundation in the future. It’s expected to become the communication platform and space of art films and cult films in Great Taichung to bring the citizens more diverse experiences on seeing movies.

Chairwoman Chou, Taiwan Women‘s Film Association, said, 2016 Women Make Waves Film Festival was held at Taichung Shin Kong Cinemas and highly recognized by the participants and fans so it’s under the collaboration with Taichung Film Development Foundation to be conducted at the theater again with the high quality of video display system. We wish to root in Taichung and connect to northern, central and southern Taiwan to seed the gender films around the island.

The officer of Information Bureau said, this film festival will introduce 10 programs. The most appealing one is ｢Progressive Restoration: Feminist Classics 1960-80s｣ with the collections of 9 classical films completed by 8 directors from 5 countries; these films were presented through fusing the original local images and the thoughts of feminism to have the marriage, body, sexual autonomy and homosexual desires interpreted as films so the audience can see how the women film-makers to create a breakthrough era for women’s films and beyond.

Besides, in ｢Ｌez’s UP！World peace｣ unit, there’s are many newly added musical movies with diverse images and films to construct the different levels of movie art. The compatibility and rejection among the Queer group are the key focused parts of the women’s film festival; the closing movie 《Bixa Travesty》has won the best documentary movie of Teddy award in 2018 Berlin International Film Festival. It’s a movie with music in conjunction with attitude to show the sentimental expression and the explosive efforts of the cross gender groups so it can enrich the film festival with various elements of movies.

2018 Women Make Waves Film Festival, Taichung will be launched on 31st October at Taichung Shin Kong Cinemas.
