Owning and dricing a vehicle in Taiwan requires mandatory third person vehicle insurance. This law has been in existence since 1988 to protect those who were involved in accidents. This ensures that injured parties will receive compensation whether or not the insured party is at fault or not.
All vehicles are required to purchase this insurance through any car insurance company or through agents of their car dealers. Drivers must be able to show that they have insurance when they are stopped at police checkpoints, failure to do so could result in fines of between NT$6000 and NT$10000, with a possibility of license suspension.
