Taichung Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival Kicks Off – Mayor Lu Invites the Public to Experience Shancheng Hakka Culture

2019 Taichung Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival is an event combining dimensions such as religion, culture, industry, tourism, and education to offer activities including Lu Pan Design and Creative Festival, woodcarving creative exhibition, emerging workplace expert selection, and career and vocation expo, etc. starting from June 16. Hosted by Taichung City Council for Hakka Affairs, the Traditional Handcraft Creative Exhibition kicked off at the Dongshi Hakka Cultural Park today (11th). According to Mayor Shiow-yen Lu, Shancheng is the hub of Taichung's Hakka culture, offering a plethora of activities such as great food, drinks, accommodation, shopping, and entertainment, therefore everyone is invited to attend the Taichung Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival in order to appreciate the beauty of different Hakka cultures.

The opening ceremony was hosted personally by Mayor Lu, where City Councilor Ling-hsuan Jan, Hakka Affairs Council Deputy Minister Tso-ming Fan, and Taichung City Council for Hakka Affairs Commissioner Chun-lung Chiang opened the wooden book together to symbolize the launch of the event. Civil Affairs Bureau Director Shih-wei Wu, Information Bureau Director General Huang-sheng Wu, Labor Affairs Bureau Deputy Director-general Chao-fang Shih, Dongshi District Executive Pei-chen Weng, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Chi-chang Tsai, Legislator Chi-chen Chiang, and representative from City Councilor Cheng-kui Tsai's office all attended the function amid a festive atmosphere.

Mayor Lu suggested that starting from today, Taichung City Hall will host the month-long Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival in collaboration with the Hakka Affairs Council. Since Dongshi, Shigang, and Xinshe are the epicenter of Hakka culture and people, in order to preserve and promote Hakka culture, and because Taichung possesses the most longstanding Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Lu Pan Temple – which enshrines the primogenitor of Chinese craftsmanship Lu Pan – the City Hall has combined the two to host the Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival.

Mayor Lu thanked the Hakka Affairs Council for providing the City Hall with guidance and assistance. Coordinated by the city's Council for Hakka Affairs, 7 bureaus have joined the event to organize a plethora of activities. Everyone is welcome to come to Shancheng, Taichung to partake in the Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival during May 11 ~ June 16, where they can experience a plethora of activities such as great food, drinks, accommodation, shopping, and entertainment, therefore everyone is invited to attend the Taichung Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival in order to appreciate the beauty of different Hakka cultures.

Hakka Affairs Council Deputy Minister Fan also welcomed everyone to visit Dongshi to participate in the Taichung Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival, so as to appreciate the Hakka culture of Dapu in Taichung. In the future, the central and municipal government will continue to work hand in hand to promote Hakka culture.

Taichung City s Council for Hakka Affairs remarked that the Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Cultural Festival has been selected as one of the 12 Major Hakka Festivals by the Hakka Affairs Council for 3 years in a row, which combines dimensions such as religion, culture, industry, tourism, and education to offer activities including Lu Pan Design and Creative Festival, woodcarving creative exhibition, emerging workplace expert selection, and career and vocation expo, etc.

First up is the Traditional Craft Creative Exhibition and Jiangliao Cultural Craft Exhibition, inviting 3 woodcarving masters including Chin-lin Liu, Feng-chi Chang, and Yen-wei Chen to demonstrate live creation at the Dongshi Hakka Cultural Park from now until the 26th. There will also be craft DIY experiences, and 50 bamboo, wood, stone and rattan craft creations will be on exhibit inside the museum, where visitors can admire the exquisite creations of artisans and participate in a guided tour conducted by professional docents.

Next, the Fostering Employment Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Lu Pan Awards will be held on May 18 and 19, selecting experts and emerging talents across 11 categories including woodworking, construction, and concrete work, woodcarving, lacquering, painting and interior decoration, interior decoration and woodworking, clothing design, architectural drawing and design, bicycle assembly, Chinese rice cuisine, and hairdressing, etc. Furthermore, the Skillful Master will be selected from the masonry category to receive an honorary prize of NT$500,000.

On May 24, the Lu Pan Christmas Celebration will be held, inviting Abibai Live Band, ZAX Music Club, singers Yin-yin Lo and Yu-chuan Huang to perform at the Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Temple in Dongshi. On May 25 and 26, Tzu-chi Hsu, UrbanCat, I-chin Chung, and Yu-wei Hsieh will take to the stage at Dongshi Hakka Cultural Park, bringing exciting performances.

On May 26, the Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Lu Pan 2526 Anniversary Birthday Celebration and temple pilgrimage ceremony will be conducted in accordance with ancient customs, making it the grandest Lu Pan praying ceremony in the country. On May 30, the When Lu Pan Meets STEAM Makers – School Maker Competition for Students Below Senior High School took place at Taichung Municipal Dongshih Industrial High School. From June 15 to 16, the Lu Pan Creative Design Festival and Wood Industry Promotion Event will be organized, featuring wood industry-themed fair and wood lacquer industry promotional activities such as wood lacquer souvenir design and product exhibition, woodworking DIY for families, forest lumber marketplace, and industry soapbox presentation, etc.

In addition, there is also the Provincial Highway No. 3 Hakka Romantic Avenue Nankou Secret Destination Discovery Film Solicitation Event, revealing secret tourist destinations throughout Provincial Highway No. 3, centered on the theme slow eating, slow traveling, and slow living. The aim is to generate local tourism developments and endow the Hakka township of Shancheng with the image of Provincial Highway No. 3 Hakka Romantic Avenue Nankou.
