According to Tourism and Travel Bureau Director-General Hsiao-chi Lin, the city government strives to create a comprehensive cycling environment and elevate service quality in a bid to form a cycling-friendly city. Voted as one of the top 10 classic bikeways in Taiwan, Dongfeng Bikeway and Houfeng Bikeway are the first bikeways reconstructed from railway tracks. With a total length of 18km, the highly popular bikeways combine green tourism with the unique features of railway, attracting more than 10 million tourists last year.
The Dongfeng Bikeway green corridor offers scenic landscape along the way, with the luxuriant trees lining both sides of the bikeway to form a "green Dajia River" that is complemented by the azure Dajia River nearby. Along the bikeway, cyclists can take in the picturesque view of Shihgang Dam, Hakka villages, Dongshi Hakka Cultural Park, natural ecology and landscape architecture, perfect for families or couples to appreciate the relaxing sensation of embracing Mother Nature via cycling.
Houfeng Bikeway runs through the no. 9 tunnel of the old mountain line railway and passes through the century-old Hualiang steel bridge across Dajia River, forming a stunning route that combines the scenery, ecology, the legacy of our forefathers engineering achievements as well as abundant history and culture, in turn offering tourists an experience that is unlike riding trains and appreciate the beauty of Taichung.
