To care for basic transportation needs of the remote areas, the Taichung City Transportation Bureau since April, 2016 has provided yellow cab bus services and from June last year, the bus lines were expanded from two to eight. The extension was highly praised by the public. Up until now, yellow cab buses have served more than 20,000 trips. Director General of the Transportation Bureau, Yeh Chao-Fu, said yellow cab buses mainly serve citizens in the remote areas and those who need to go to school, visit a doctor and go shopping can enjoy free rides. The public was encouraged to make the best use of the services. Director General of the Bureau, Yeh Chao-Fu, said yellow cab buses are public buses and cabs with both service features of public bus and mobility of the yellow cab to respond to road situations to enter remote areas and to provide the last mile public services. The public can register for free rides on yellow cab buses and for some areas where no public bus services are available when a rider is waving his arms for the convenience of passengers. Director General Yeh pointed out that originally there were only two lines of yellow cab buses but starting from last June, services were expanded to six lines. At present, Taichung has eight yellow cab bus lines including Yellow #1 Fengyuan Stadium Line, Yellow#2 Dongshi Bitouli Line, Yellow #3 Xinshe Wuchun Line, Yellow#4 Fengyuan Puzi Line, Yellow#5 Huangzhu Line, Yellow #6 Tunglin Line, Yellow#7Jiouzheng Xiangbi Line, and Yellow#8 Keliline. Compared to the general public buses, the Taichung City Government needs to offer lower operating allowance by saving the subsidy amount of NT$3.76 million. According to Director General Yeh, yellow cab buses are utilized by replacing public buses with yellow cabs and having them serve on a regular basis of timetables and routes. Because each cab carries fewer passengers than a public bus, the maximum number of four, to avoid long waiting time, the public is advised to make a phone call for prior reservation a day before. Operators will adjust the number of cabs according to the reservations.
