Mayor Lu Promotes "Slow down," "Take a Look" and "Stop" at Intersections for Road and Traffic Safety with Elementary School Students
The Taichung City Transportation Bureau and Police Bureau today (the 20th) organized the "Young Driver Hit the Role" event to educate children about road safety. Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen wore a yellow elementary school cap and performed an interactive play with 55 students from Datun Elementary School in Nantun District to teach children to slow down, take a look and stop at intersections when riding on a bike. According to Mayor Lu, the Taichung City Government put great efforts to ensure road and traffic safety. She hoped that through promotion events, correct concepts can be taught to every corner of Taichung. Her cabinet will continuously promote road and traffic safety education to keep road users safer. The promotion event of road and traffic safety was organized at the Civic Building on Taiwan Boulevard where a mobile road and traffic safety education zone for road simulation was designed. Mayor Lu and school children crossed intersections and sang the "Slow down, Take a Look and Stop" song in a relaxing atmosphere. Children were arranged to ride on mini Harley Davidson police edition and mini cars designated for kids to get hands-on experiences to simulate how to stop at intersections where there are no traffic signals and to give way to cars driving straight when making a turn. Children were able to learn from both perspectives of pedestrians and drivers. Mayor Lu said the Transportation Bureau makes great efforts to promote road and traffic safety and therefore, the event of Traffic Safety Month was organized in a larger scale. The Taichung City Government approved this educational way and cooperated with great efforts. Today, through simulation, friends of all ages learned correct road and traffic safety concepts. For example, do not cross the intersections but stop when a green light blinks since a blinking green light reminds pedestrians that the green light will turn red soon. The Taichung City Government will continuously promote road and traffic safety to reduce the number of deaths and injuries and to keep road users safer. Organizers also brought a large car to the venue today to invite Mayor Lu to take the driver’s seat and to educate about "vehicle blind spot" in order to remind drivers of big vehicles to use the turn signals when making turns, look behind and check the back mirror to ensure safety. In addition, slow down, take a look and keep alert at intersections. Attendees of today’s event included Director General of the Transportation Bureau, Yeh Chao-Fu, Director General of Police Department, Tsai Po-Chang, Executive Secretary of Road Traffic Safety Commission of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications(MOTC), Wu Mu-Fu and Councilmen of the Taichung City, Lo Ting-Wei. The event demonstrated the public and private partnership for road and traffic safety education supported by the Chinese Taipei Mobile Federation, Taichung Motor Vehicles Office, Director General of Highways, MOTC, the Information Bureau, the Education Bureau, Datun Elementary School in Nantun and several elementary schools in Dali District including Neixin Elementary School (10/20*13)* The Transportation Bureau
