Recognition of Taichung's Smart Transport by the MOTC with the Honorable Mention Award Given for "Smart Dynamic Signals"

To solve traffic congestion on the main routes in Taichung City, the Taichung City Transportation Bureau continuously promoted the "Smart Dynamic Progressive Signal Project" by introducing real-time traffic forecast and big data analysis to arrange the optimum time interval for a green light. This project was now awarded by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) with the Honorable Mention Award in the evaluation for the 2021 Smart Transport System Development Project among the participation of more than 20 cities and counties around Taiwan. This award indicated the recognition of the Central Government for Taichung City's smart signal construction and installation project. Director General of the Transportation Bureau, Yeh Chao-Fu, said Wuquan West Rd. connects the downtown area and the interchange of National Highway No.1 in Nantun District, an important route for commuters and tourists. The Bureau completed the construction and installation of smart dynamic signal system at 17 intersections on Wuquan West Rd. (from Meichun Rd. to Wenxin South 5th Rd.) to improve traffic on Wuquan West Rd. Director General Yeh pointed out that after the use of the smart dynamic signal system on Wuquan West Rd., road users can reduce the frequency to stop at the red light by one to two times while during the rush hours, those traveling to the National Highway No.1 via Nantun Interchange of Wuquan West Rd. can save about 2.5 minutes. Each year, about 100,000 liters of gasoline and 260,000 kilograms of carbon emission can be reduced. Director General Yeh said Taichung City's "2021 Smart Dynamic Progressive Signal Project on Taichung's Main Routes" has received the Honorable Mention Award from the MOTC and that indicates Taichung's promotion efforts has been highly recognized by the Central Government. The Taichung City Government will make use of the promotion experience of constructing and installing smart dynamic progressive signals on Zhongqing Rd. and Wuquan Rd. to resolve the congested traffic flow issue on Taiwan Boulevard in consideration of the progressive traffic flow on the main and sub-lanes. In the future, the smart signal system will be introduced to Taichung's main routes and where it is hoped that traffic congestion problems will improve the congested traffic flow during peak hours.
