Taichung piloted emergency vehicle priority signs to improve traffic safety of fire and ambulance vehicles.

We cannot afford to waste a single minute and safety must come first! The Taichung City Government cooperated with the Institute of Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and Chunghwa Telecom to improve the driving safety of fire rescue and ambulance vehicles in 2022. They piloted priority signs for emergency vehicles, which the lights would turn green before passing the Shuinan Trade and Economic Park and Section 5 of Xiangsheng Road. According to the Bureau of Transportation of the Taichung City Government, the trial operation in Shuinan Economic and Trade Park reduced the average number of ambulance trips of the Shuinan Fire Brigade by 57 seconds, and the probability of passing the green light increased to 96%. In addition, Section 5 of Xiangsheng Road also saved 13 to 22 seconds, an improvement of 24 to 55%. Chao-Fu Yeh, director of the Transportation Bureau, stated that dispatching fire rescue and ambulance vehicles for duty is a race against time. The Transport Bureau, in cooperation with the Institute of Transportation of Ministry of Transportation and Communications and Chunghwa Telecom, launched the "priority signs for emergency vehicles plan" to improve the deployment efficiency and traffic safety of fire rescue and ambulance vehicles last year. They use 5G vehicle networking technology to give full play to the efficiency of real-time signal control, try to let fire rescue and ambulance vehicles pass through the intersection with green lights, and improve traffic safety when they pass through the intersection. It also reduces the congestion of fire and vehicles in traffic during rush hours. The Transportation Bureau indicated that it had selected two trial sites, Shuinan Economic and Trade Park and Section 5 of Xiangsheng Road. In the performance evaluation of the Shuinan Economic and Trade Park, the ambulance will pass through three intersections from the Shuinan fire brigade to Zhongping Road. The probability of vehicles arriving at the intersection and getting the green light is 33% before the system was activated. After using the system, the possibility rises to 96%, which significantly increases the probability of ambulance vehicles getting a green light at the intersection. It shows that the priority number of emergency vehicles can effectively shorten the ambulance response time and improve efficiency and driving safety. Director Yeh said two selected pilot sites last year to provide a safe and smooth driving environment for fire rescue vehicles under the control of the priority signs for emergency vehicles, thus improving the efficiency of disaster relief and rescue. Furthermore, the cooperation project between the Transport Bureau and China Telecom won the "Service Innovation Award for the Evaluation of the 5G Smart Transport Subsidy Program of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications." In the future, the city government will re-evaluate the follow-up appropriate implementation field and gradually promote the application to other regions of Taichung City. The Transportation Bureau stressed that the rescue operation is urgent. Therefore, Taichung City has built intelligent transportation, introduced priority signs for emergency vehicles, and made fire rescue and ambulance vehicles run smoothly during the prime time window of emergency dispatching. It also urges the public to slow down and give priority to the fire rescue and ambulance vehicles when they hear the sirens. You can save precious lives by simply giving way to them.
