From October 1 this year, ban the use of one-time beverage cup objects and implementation methods.

The Taichung City Government is actively promoting the reduction of plastic usage at its source. It has expanded its implementation to cooperate with the Environmental Protection Agency of the Executive Yuan's plastic reduction policy. Starting October 1st this year, "beverage stores" within the jurisdiction of Taichung City will not be allowed to provide plastic as a one-time beverage cup (including PLA cups made of biodegradable plastic). The Environmental Protection Bureau indicated that the estimated policy of reducing the use of 106 million plastic cups in one year when implemented. In case of violation, you shall impose a fine of more than NTD 1200 and less than 6000 following Paragraph 3, Article 51 of the Waste Disposal Act. The city government calls on businesses to cooperate with policy implementation to avoid penalties for violations.

According to Hong-Yi Chen, director of the Environmental Protection Bureau, Taichung City's chain beverage vending business will no longer provide beverage cups and tableware made of Styrofoam and its composite materials from January 1, 2021. This time will expand the target and scope of implementation in response to the international plastic reduction trend. After the Environmental Protection Agency approved and announced the "implementation date that beverage stores in Taichung City are not allowed to provide plastic as a one-time beverage cup," starting from October 1 this year, beverage stores within the jurisdiction of Taichung City (including chain and non-chain) shall not use disposable beverage cups made of plastic materials. And the public is encouraged to cultivate the environmental habit of self-prepared beverage cups. Moreover, people buy beverages in chain beverage stores, convenience stores, fast food restaurants, and supermarkets in line with environmental protection policies. People can enjoy a price difference of more than NTD 5 (inclusive).

The Environmental Protection Bureau stated that there are currently about 5000 chain and non-chain beverage stores (including fast food stores, supermarkets, and convenience stores) in Taichung City. Over 60% (about 3000) still use plastic as a one-time beverage cup. The Environmental Protection Bureau will strengthen instruction and publicity before the implementation date. They urge businesses to take inventory and stock up on alternative materials in advance, and cooperate with plastic disposable beverage cup replacement. At that time, if finding violations, the bureau will impose the store a fine following Paragraph 3, Article 51 of the Waste Disposal Act. Remind operators to cooperate to avoid violating the law.

The Environmental Protection Bureau calls for green consumption and environmental protection habits of "self-preparation, repetition, and less use." Only by reducing the amount of waste generated from supply as a one-time use can we start from the source. If the public forgets to bring their reusable cups when consuming, they can go to Taichung City chain convenience stores, fast food stores, and beverage stores. People can take the lead in experiencing the use of recycled cups at six brands (FamilyMart, OK mart, Hi-Life, MOS Burger, Subway, and Starbucks) to experience borrowing a cycle cup, of which 42 stores in Taichung City that provide this service. For borrowing methods, you can contact the official website of various enterprise brands for announcements.
