1. A missing person is someone who has his/her household registration in Taiwan and meets one of the following circumstances:
(1) He / She goes away from home with father (mother) or relatives and disappears.
(2) He / She goes away from home and disappears.
(3) He / She has experienced unexpected disasters (such accidents happening in the sea, air, and mountain).
(4) He / She has lost his/her way.
(5) He / She has lost on his/her way to school and disappears.
(6) He / She has got lost due to mental retardation.
(7) He / She has got lost due to mental illness.
(8) He / She has got lost due to natural disaster (such as flood, fire, typhoon, earthquake and others).
(9) Others.
2. Where can I file a missing person report? What certificates or documents or items should I bring along?
You can file a missing person report at the nearest police authority, especially the police station where the missing case takes place. Your report will be accepted immediately with the message spread out nation-wide for search and support . Please bring along identity certificates /proofs of the informant and the missing person and photos of the missing person, if possible.
3. Who should file a missing person report?
The police authorities will normally accept the report from a missing person's parents (or legal representative), family members or relatives. Exceptional circumstances should be handled as follows:
(1) If a missing person does not have any relative in Taiwan, the relevant competent authority or the chief of the township, neighborhood, and community where the missing person resides is responsible for filing the report.
(2) In an emergency case (such as a mountain accident or other accidents, etc.), the report of a missing person’s companions should be taken and then confirmed by his/her parents (or legal representative), family members or relatives.
(3) If the missing person belongs to any asylum case commissioned by social affairs authorities or public or private social welfare institutions, the relevant competent authority shall be responsible for filing the report and handling the case in accordance with the relevant regulations.
(4) If the missing person is commissioned by his/her family to a public or private social welfare institution, the said institution or his/her family shall file the report. If the report is filed by the said institution alone, the contact information with the family members shall be attached.
