With increasing global emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Taichung City Government’s Tourism and Travel Bureau continues to promote sustainable tourism by developing eco-conscious, green energy, and socially responsible travel models. Recently, Taichung was recognized in the 2024 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories and was the only one among Taiwan’s six municipalities to earn an “Excellence” rating in the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle’s national evaluation. Furthermore, the Tourism and Travel Bureau has helped five businesses secure Green Travel Seal (GTS) and supported 57 hotels in obtaining low-carbon certification—demonstrating Taichung’s commitment to sustainable tourism. The bureau welcomes visitors to travel to Taichung during the Chinese New Year, take advantage of the eco-friendly tourist buses, and experience the city’s scenic landscapes in a low-carbon, environmentally friendly way.
According to Tourism and Travel Bureau Director Chen Mei-hsiu, Taichung joined Green Destinations, a Netherlands-based international organization, in 2023 and adopted its global certification framework. In 2024, Taichung highlighted its sustainability efforts through the Taichung International Flower Carpet Festival and participated in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition. Competing against 170 travel destinations from 32 countries, Taichung distinguished itself and received the award on December 11, 2023, in Punta Arenas, Chile—making it the first and only city government in Taiwan to achieve this recognition.
Director Chen added that the Tourism and Travel Bureau continues to hold information sessions for local tourism businesses to understand international sustainable travel trends, collaborate with global organizations to offer training programs, and assist both tourism industry partners and government personnel in obtaining international certifications. These efforts have been well-received and widely recognized within the sector. This year, with guidance from the bureau, five Taichung businesses successfully obtained the 2025 Green Travel Seal global certification, reinforcing the city’s professional prowess in sustainable tourism. Through public-private collaboration, Taichung continues to elevate its visibility in the global green tourism market.
According to the Tourism and Travel Bureau, Taichung City is expanding its tourist bus network to support low-carbon travel, offering themed events and curated itineraries highlighting sustainable tourism in central Taiwan. A top recommendation for the Chinese New Year holiday is the 888 Fenghou Line, which takes visitors to Lihpao Resort, Yuemei Sugar Factory, and Houli Horse Ranch. Travelers can also stop by Zhongshe Tourist Flower Market to admire the vibrant tulip blooms before heading to Fengyuan Miaodong Night Market for local culinary delights in the evening. As Fengyuan is renowned for its pastries, it’s also the perfect place to pick up specialty souvenirs. This family-friendly route offers a great way to explore Taichung.
