To encourage cancer patients to face their battles with courage and cherish life, the Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural & Educational Foundation hosted a press conference today (24th) titled “Unveiling the Secret to Conquering Four Types of Cancer: Miracle Doctor Chen Wei-hua Receives the Fervent Global Love of Lives Award.” Liao Zong-hou, Deputy Director of the Social Affairs Bureau, presented the award on behalf of Taichung City Mayor Lu Shiow-yen. The award recognized Dr. Chen Wei-hua's multiple victories over cancer and his dedication to public welfare. During the event, he shared the key to defeating four different cancers, showing through his own battle that “cancer does not mark the end of life.”

Deputy Director Liao mentioned that Dr. Chen Wei-hua, who founded Hongxin Clinic in Taichung and turned it into a center dedicated to supporting cancer patients, is “a beacon of pride for Taichung.” Despite being diagnosed with bone cancer, kidney cancer, thyroid cancer, and blood cancer (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) at just 32 years old, Dr. Chen has battled these illnesses for more than three decades, triumphing over cancer several times. He now regards his experience with cancer as a miraculous gift that emerged from hardship, finding a way to live alongside the diseases.

Chou Chin-hua, the founder of the Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural & Educational Foundation, explained that the foundation was created to honor the late cancer-fighting poet Chou Ta-kuan's commitment to “loving life and living joyfully.” The foundation has been promoting global initiatives related to loving life and has introduced the Fervent Global Love of Lives Award to recognize individuals who embody this spirit. Dr. Chen Wei-hua was selected from a pool of 3,683 candidates recommended for the award worldwide and was awarded the 28th Fervent Global Love of Lives Award 2025.

The Social Affairs Bureau noted that to support disadvantaged citizens in Taichung City who are dealing with illness or injury, the city offers medical and caregiving subsidies. These are available to low-income, middle-low-income households, and individuals with special conditions or vulnerable statuses who are registered in Taichung. Depending on eligibility, different subsidy amounts are provided, with medical subsidies up to 150,000 NTD annually and caregiving subsidies up to 180,000 NTD per year. Those in need can apply at their local district office's social services division. Taichung safeguards the disadvantaged, injured, and ill citizens and ensures access to essential medical care.
