As Earth Day celebrates its 55th year on April 22, the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” emphasizes global cooperation in accelerating the energy transition and supporting renewable energy made from natural resources of the Earth. The Tourism and Travel Bureau of the Taichung City Government encourages travelers from around Taiwan to book stays at officially certified low-carbon hotels. By embracing eco-friendly practices in all aspects of our trip—food, accommodation, recreation, shopping, and transportation—we can do our part in environmental sustainability.
According to the Tourism and Travel Bureau, the city government is committed to advancing sustainable tourism by implementing the Taichung City Low-Carbon Hotel Certification Program. The program assesses hardware and software aspects, including electricity usage, lighting, air conditioning, and other low-carbon and energy-saving measures, to certify high-quality low-carbon hotels. To date, 57 hotels in Taichung have earned certification, and the city government continues to guide and motivate more hotels to join the initiative. These efforts not only help achieve net-zero emissions and sustainable operations but also give travelers more accommodation options when visiting Taichung.
Additionally, to align with global environmental efforts and curb plastic waste, the Ministry of Environment has announced the Regulations on the Restrictions and Implementation Methods for the Use of Disposable Hotel Amenities, effective this year. The Tourism and Travel Bureau urges travelers to bring their own toiletries and personal care items. By taking concrete actions, both accommodation providers and guests can help ease the strain on the environment and embrace a greener way of living—incorporating eco-friendly habits—such as reducing plastic use and waste—into their daily lives.
The Tourism and Travel Bureau highlighted that Taichung was the first—and so far only—city in Taiwan to be recognized among the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories worldwide. The city also earned the Tourism Administration’s first-ever Sustainable Tourism Promotion Award and successfully helped five local tourism businesses achieve Green Travel Seal (GTS) certification. These accomplishments have boosted Taichung’s competitiveness in the global tourism market, positioning it as a go-to destination for eco-conscious travelers. When it comes to sustainable tourism, Taichung leads the way!
The Tourism and Travel Bureau added that Taichung is committed to linking green destinations, promoting energy-efficient travel options and low-carbon hotels, and optimizing hiking trails and bike paths. These efforts aim to gradually lay the groundwork for sustainable tourism. Taichung warmly invites visitors to discover the beauty of central Taiwan firsthand.
