The Taichung Aquarium—Taiwan’s first aquarium planned by a local government—is set to open later this year. To prepare for the expected surge in tourists, Taichung’s Transportation Bureau has updated local bus services for the surrounding area. Beginning May 4, bus routes 309, 679, and 688 will be adjusted to stop directly in front of the aquarium, with two new stops added: “Taichung Aquarium” and “Wuqi Tourist Fishing Port 1.” These adjustments will link the aquarium with major transit points like Taichung, Dajia, and Qingshui stations, Chaoma , as well as the Taichung International Airport, offering easy access to the aquarium and helping promote nearby coastal attractions such as Wuqi Fishing Port and Gaomei Wetlands.
Transportation Bureau Director Yeh Chao-fu noted that the upcoming Taichung Aquarium, located near coastal hotspots like Wuqi Tourist Fishing Port and Gaomei Wetlands, is expected to attract large crowds once it opens. Weekend and holiday traffic congestion in the Wuqi Tourist Fishing area highlights the urgent need for improved public transit. In response, the Transportation Bureau assessed nearby roads and existing bus routes, and worked with bus operators to adjust services. Their goal is clear: to not only add new routes but also to ensure smooth access to the area.
“The Taichung Aquarium is a new highlight in Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen’s development of the coastal region and will create new opportunities for tourism,” said Director Yeh. He pointed out that the coastal area is rich in natural attractions, such as fishing ports and the Gaomei Wetlands. To improve accessibility around Taichung Port, public buses will soon travel via the road in front of the aquarium and the Beiti Road intersection. The Transportation Bureau plans to extend routes 309, 679, and 688 to the Taichung Aquarium to make visiting easier and to promote greater use of public transit.
According to the Transportation Bureau, beginning May 4, bus routes 309, 679, and 688 will be adjusted to include two new stops—"Taichung Aquarium” and “Wuqi Tourist Fishing Port 1.” To optimize the routes, routes 679 and 688 will no longer pass through the internal roads of Wuqi Tourist Fishing Port. This optimization will offer quicker public transport access for visitors. Those going to Wuqi Tourist Fishing Port can reach the market through the walkway from the new stop “Wuqi Tourist Fishing Port 1.”
The Transportation Bureau noted that these bus routes link major transport hubs like Taichung Station, Qingshui Station, Chaoma, and the Taichung International Airport, making it easy for visitors to continue their journey after exploring the Taichung Aquarium. Popular nearby destinations include Gaomei Wetlands, downtown Qingshui, Wuqi Old Street, the Seaport Art Center, and Mitsui Outlet Park. To better serve international tourists, some 679-route buses will also feature large luggage racks.
According to Director Yeh, to better connect public transit with tourism, the Transportation Bureau has launched the Time-based QR Combo Tickets (Taichung go Combo Ticket) that combine MRT and bus access. Available in 24-hour (NT$180), 48-hour (NT$280), and 72-hour (NT$380) options, these tickets allow unlimited rides on Taichung’s buses and MRT during the selected timeframe. Tourists can conveniently purchase them on their phones for easy travel around the city.
Additionally, to provide more convenient mobility services, Taichung has introduced the Citizen-Exclusive QR Code that builds on existing transit card discounts with a new payment method. Citizens can simply download the “Taichung Go” app, link it to a supported payment service like Easy Wallet, iPASS MONEY, or icash Pay, and scan the QR code when boarding and exiting city buses. This allows users enjoy the exclusive “Double Ten” bus fare discount without needing a physical card, offering more flexible travel options.
The Transportation Bureau encourages the public to take advantage of the “Trip Planning” feature available on the Taichung Bus Information System and the official “Taichung Go” app. By entering a starting point and destination, users can view recommended bus routes for their trips.
