With Mother's Day nearing, the Social Affairs Bureau organized a photo event titled “Model Mothers Meet with the Mayor” at the Assembly Hall of the city government on the 4th. Around 400 model mothers and 2,500 of their family members and friends attended. Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen posed for photos with mothers from different districts, thanking them for their unwavering commitment to their families, comparing their abilities to those of magicians and superheroes, always safeguarding their children's safety as they grow up.
Mayor Lu shared that as the only female mayor among the six municipalities, and as a mother herself, she fully understands the hardships and greatness of being a mom. Mothers have many roles to play: at times, they’re like magicians, finding ways to fulfill their children's wishes; other times, they’re like superheroes, courageously protecting and caring for them. Despite the immense effort and labor involved, mothers never ask for anything in return. Their greatest wish is simply for their children to live safely, happily, and healthily.
Mayor Lu noted that each model mother has an inspiring story to tell. Whether it’s focusing on raising their children, managing the challenges of both family life and work, or actively participating in charitable causes to help the disadvantaged, they all demonstrate an unwavering, selfless devotion. This spirit of motherhood is a source of strength that contributes to the stability and warmth of society. She encouraged everyone to use Mother’s Day as a chance to show love and appreciation to their mothers, while also expressing gratitude to the city government staff for their thoughtful planning of the event, which allow mothers and their families to create wonderful memories.
The Social Affairs Bureau noted that starting in mid-April, the 29 districts of Taichung City have hosted recognition ceremonies for model mothers, honoring 718 women and awarding them medals as a gesture of the utmost respect and appreciation.
One of this year’s honorees is Chen Wang-Chun from Dajia District, who is 100 years old. At just 15, she bravely carried her blind grandmother from their mudbrick house to safety during the catastrophic floods. Her resilience deeply moved the local community. Despite financial struggles, she was determined to ensure her children received a good education, and today, her descendants have achieved great success.
Xie Su-Zhen, a mother from Shalu District, served as a teacher for 32 years and was deeply loved by her students, becoming both a cherished teacher and a close friend. After retirement, she remains dedicated to volunteer service, putting into practice the belief that “giving is more blessed than receiving,” and spreading kindness to every part of society.
Yang Huang Shu-E, a mother from West District, faced a time when the internet was not widely available and courageously moved with her three children to the United States to pursue their education. She overcame language and cultural challenges to support their growth. Over the years, she has also been involved in international adoption of impoverished African children and supporting charity work and free medical services in rural areas, showcasing her boundless compassion.
Liu Shu-Zhen, a mother from North District, has carried on her mother-in-law's legacy by making Hakka tangyuan and passing down the tradition through three generations, working tirelessly to promote Hakka cuisine. As a dedicated volunteer, she has spent many years serving her community, often cooking tangyuan to share with others. She is a model for both family and community
