A glowing LED armband represents the Taichung City Government's boundless care for its senior citizens! In an effort to enhance the traffic safety of elderly residents, Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen personally filmed a video demonstrating the correct way to wear the LED armband. She warmly reminds senior citizens to wear brightly colored clothing and put on the LED armband when going out in the early morning or evening. Visibility ensures safety and peace of mind! This video will be released across various platforms, including the city government’s official website, the Transportation Bureau's website, LINE groups, and local district offices, in order to promote traffic safety awareness and proactive engagement throughout every corner of the community.
Mayor Lu ntoed that this LED armband is user-friendly and can be worn on the arm, wrist, or even ankle. It emits a bright, flashing light, making it particularly effective in dimly lit areas or during times of low visibility. This serves as a significant alert to drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, allowing them to better notice the presence of senior citizens, thereby reducing the risk of traffic accidents and enhancing safety during outdoor activities. Many elderly residents have daily routines such as morning jogs, brisk walking, or grocery shopping. When they go out before daylight is fully present, visibility is low, and without clear warning accessories, they may be easily overlooked by fast-moving vehicles. These lightweight and easy-to-use glowing armbands thus become a caring and vital safety device.
Director Yeh Chao-Fu of the Transportation Bureau noted that Taichung is a city dedicated to safeguarding its senior citizens. In collaboration with relevant departments responsible for traffic safety, the Transportation Bureau will distribute LED armbands free of charge to the public through traffic safety awareness campaigns. These armbands are especially promoted among those who exercise in the early morning or evening hours. The city government offers armbands in various colors, including green, yellow, white, and red. Designed with hook-and-loop fasteners, they are secure and not easily dislodged when worn on the arm. By cultivating the simple habit of wearing this armband, seniors become a visible, illuminated presence on the streets. This not only strengthens their awareness of self-protection but also reflects the city government’s thoughtful care and concern for the elderly community.
Director Yeh added that, in addition to the 33 traffic safety awareness campaigns organized by the Transportation Bureau this year in collaboration with women's associations, Taichung City’s Traffic Safety Promotion Team continues to work across departments. By utilizing a variety of media platforms and in-person educational campaigns—such as those held at district offices organized by the Civil Affairs Bureau, senior learning centers, care stations, and community activity centers—they engage directly with elderly residents, providing hands-on demonstrations on how to wear the armband and follow traffic safety guidelines. These efforts aim to ensure that seniors can understand, learn, and willingly adopt these safety measures. Whether going out for exercise, visiting friends, attending medical appointments, or shopping, taking one extra step—wearing an LED armband—adds a vital layer of protection. Whether walking or jogging in parks or along greenways at night, or heading out early in the morning, wearing a glowing armband on the arm or ankle enhances visibility.
“As long as our senior citizens follow traffic rules and remain aware of their personal safety, they can avoid regret and harm,” said Director Yeh. Mayor Lu hopes that through the promotion of LED armbands, seniors will be encouraged to wear brightly colored clothing when going out, especially during early morning and evening hours. This not only enhances their own sense of security but also brings peace of mind to their families. The city government remains committed to building a safe and friendly transportation environment, so that all residents—regardless of age—can walk the streets safely, leave home with peace of mind, and return safely, fostering a happy and livable city together.
