To create a diverse and inclusive space at Taichung Central Park, the Taichung City Government’s Construction Bureau has invested NT$66.75 million to implement the Central Park Flying Melody Playground Project. The project includes the country’s longest 32-meter dual-track zipline, a 30-meter circular slide track, themed flying combination slides, a multi-user 360-degree centrifugal bird’s nest swing, wheelchair-accessible swings, and other facilities. Additionally, multiple shaded areas have been added to enhance overall comfort. The project underwent three phases of construction and is now fully completed. Today (16th), Mayor Lu Shiow-yen personally officiated the opening ceremony and sincerely invites local residents and visitors from across Taiwan to come and experience the new park.
Mayor Lu noted that Central Park, themed after its former use as an old airport, incorporates airport elements in the design of the visitor center and playground equipment. To address the high-temperature climate, sunshade and rain shelter facilities were installed to increase year-round usage. The recently completed third phase of the project further enhances user-friendly features by adding accessible swings and wheelchair charging stations, providing care for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. With the country’s longest zipline and tallest slide, the park has become a popular family travel destination nationwide, attracting visitors both day and night.
Director Chen Da-tian of the Construction Bureau pointed out that Central Park, located at the core of the Shui-nan Economic and Trade Park and covering an area of 67 hectares, is known as the “Green Lung of Taichung” and serves as a key site for the city’s efforts toward sustainable net-zero goals. The “Flying Melody Playground” spans approximately 4,200 square meters. The first phase of the project introduced the country’s longest 32-meter dual-track zipline, a 30-meter circular slide track, themed flying combination slides, and various challenging play facilities. Subsequent phases further enriched the overall play experience by adding accessible equipment such as wheelchair swings and wheelchair spinning plates. Additionally, supportive facilities including communication boards, tactile maps, and wheelchair charging stations were installed to ensure that children with mobility difficulties and physical or mental disabilities can safely participate and share in the joy of play. The playground is also designed to be friendly to visually impaired individuals.
The Construction Bureau explained that the “Flying Melody Playground” specifically preserves the site’s original terrain and existing trees to maintain microclimate regulation and flood detention functions. In consideration of the impacts of extreme weather, additional sunshade facilities have been installed to optimize the environment. Furthermore, the playground features a circular play route designed to offer challenges at varying levels, encouraging children to enhance their abilities through exploration, experimentation, and repeated practice, thereby promoting physical development and social interaction.
The Construction Bureau noted that as a landmark urban park in Taichung City, the completion and opening of the “Flying Melody Playground” not only provides residents with a high-quality leisure and recreational space but also demonstrates Taichung’s commitment to being child-friendly and advancing urban development. The city government sincerely invites families with children from all counties and cities to visit, experience the playground that integrates history, technology, and the joy of challenge, and share in these wonderful moments together.
