The 2025 Para Powerlifting World Cup recently concluded in Beijing, where Taichung athletes Chen Yi-Ying and Lin Ya-Hsuan represented Taiwan under the guidance of Coach Hsu Chi-Chuan. Demonstrating outstanding performance, they earned a silver and bronze medal respectively. On behalf of Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen, Taichung’s Sports Bureau Director Yu Chih-Hsiang extended his congratulations to both athletes. Chen Yi-Ying secured second place in the 65kg category with a total lift of 377 kilograms, while Lin Ya-Hsuan achieved third place in the 67kg category with a total of 238 kilograms. Competing against elite athletes from 22 countries, both athletes stood out with their remarkable achievements, bringing honor to both Taiwan and Taichung City.
According to the Sports Bureau, both Chen Yi-Ying and Lin Ya-Hsuan are outstanding athletes who have been consistently trained and supported by Taichung City. The two also delivered remarkable performances at the 2024 National Disabled Games. Lin Ya-Hsuan claimed the gold medal in the Women’s Powerlifting Category VI (for athletes with physical impairments), while Chen Yi-Ying earned the silver medal in the Men’s Powerlifting Category IV. Their achievements affirmed their exceptional talent and strength.
The Sports Bureau also noted that the training journey for para-athletes is particularly arduous. In addition to enduring intense physical challenges, they must commit to long-term training with unwavering determination in order to establish themselves in the competitive arena. The results achieved at this international event are a testament to years of dedication and hard work.
The Sports Bureau explained that Taichung was the first city in Taiwan to establish a Sports Federation for Individuals with Disabilities, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to promoting para sports. Since taking office, Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen has actively advanced sports equality, striving to create a friendly sporting environment. The city government continues to assist para-athletes in achieving steady progress and reaching the international stage.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the Taichung City Government and the Taichung Sports Federation for Individuals with Disabilities, the city’s athletes have consistently achieved outstanding results in both national and international competitions. Notably, the Taichung team ranked second overall in the past two editions of the National Disabled Games. In addition, track and field athlete Hsu Le broke the world record at the Deaflympics in Brazil, and table tennis players Lin Tzu-Yu and Tian Hsiao-Wen claimed a silver medal in women’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games—further proof of Taichung’s abundance of athletic talent.
The Sports Bureau emphasized that the city government will continue to promote sports equality, enhance training environments, and collaborate closely with sports organizations and related institutions to provide athletes with stable support. It is hoped that more athletes will continue to make breakthroughs in various competitions, bringing honor to Taiwan and pride to Taichung.
