CommonWealth Magazine’s Smile Taiwan has released the results of the 2025 Taiwan Sustainable Tourism Readiness Survey. Taichung City ranked first among the six municipalities and third nationwide. Representing the city government, Taichung’s Tourism and Travel Bureau Director Chen Mei-hsiu attended the award ceremony yesterday (27th). Director Chen noted that in 2023, Taichung became the first city in Taiwan to adopt an international green tourism management system. Through a series of policy initiatives, the city has since earned multiple recognitions, including the Top 100 Story Awards and the Sustainable Tourism Promotion Contribution Award. These achievements not only highlight Taichung’s outstanding progress in advancing sustainable tourism but also enhance its international visibility. The city continues to pursue certification as a Sustainable Tourism Destination, working toward the vision of becoming a benchmark for sustainable cities.
The Tourism and Travel Bureau explained that CommonWealth Magazine held the 2025 Sustainable Cities and Townships Forum yesterday at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park under the theme “A Core Training Program for Local Communities.” The event featured keynote speeches and four thematic sessions, where local influential figures deeply engaged in community development shared their own sustainable initiatives and experiences. As the highlight of the forum, CommonWealth Magazine’s Smile Taiwan in collaboration with National Chi Nan University released the analytical report on the Sustainable Tourism Readiness Survey for Taiwan’s Counties and Cities. In addition to recognizing this year’s top-performing counties and cities, the forum also invited award-winning municipalities to share their practices, fostering exchange and mutual learning among counties and cities.
Director Chen noted that this year marks the first time CommonWealth Magazine has conducted a survey and evaluation of sustainable tourism readiness across counties and cities. She expressed her appreciation that the evaluation provided a comprehensive review, recognizing the diverse achievements of different cities in advancing sustainable tourism. Taichung performed remarkably well across the five key dimensions of sustainability management, economy, society, culture, and environment, as well as 18 core indicators. The city was commended for its comprehensiveness, continuity, locality, and innovation, ultimately ranking first among the six municipalities and third nationwide. This accomplishment reflects the city government’s success in leveraging cross-sector collaboration among industry, government, and academia to advance sustainable tourism development.
The Tourism and Travel Bureau added that sustainable tourism is a global trend in the travel industry and sincerely invites domestic and international visitors to experience Taichung’s unique approach to sustainable tourism. Moving forward, the bureau will continue to develop innovative models and carefully curate a wide range of themed activities.
