The Taichung Art Museum will officially open on December 13. Its inaugural exhibition, “A Call of All Beings,” showcases a diverse range of creative practices that reflect the richness of contemporary art. During the exhibition period, a series of public programs will be presented, including panel discussions with domestic and international curators and artists, live performances, and hands-on workshops. These events invite the public to rediscover the relationship between art and everyday life through multisensory experiences, marking the beginning of the museum’s grand opening.
On the museum’s first opening weekend, the Taichung Art Museum will host “Landscapes of Encounters: Curatorial and Artistic Talks.” The event invites the inaugural exhibition’s curators—Anca Mihuleţ-Kim, Alaina Claire Feldman, and Chow Ling-chih—together with participating artists for an in-depth discussion on the exhibition’s curatorial concepts, the role of public cultural spaces, and current trends in contemporary art. One of the sessions will center on the artworks displayed in the museum’s public spaces. Internationally renowned artists Haegue Yang and Michael Lin will share how their works respond to the city’s history and the spatial character of the museum.
Director Chen Chia-chun of the Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that the museum’s opening highlights its role as a public platform, inviting community members, local schools, and organizations to take part in collaborative creation. For example, the museum has arranged for the Indonesian Papermoon Puppet Theatre to work with P'uma Elementary School, the first indigenous experimental elementary school in Taiwan, to present the parade performance “Storytelling with Nature.” Together with the children, they will explore their feelings toward the land and nature, using collective creation to demonstrate the power of artistic participation.
Taichung Art Museum Director Lai I-hsin noted that the exhibition also extends into Taiwan’s art history, guiding visitors through the development of Taiwanese art from the postwar period to the present. The museum has invited art historians Professor Yang Yung-yuan and Professor Hsieh Chia-chuan to discuss the vision of postwar Taiwanese landscape from the perspective after World War II. In addition, Professor Junghee Moon, together with artists Professor Ava Hsueh and Professor Lee Chen-hui, will engage in a dialogue on “Women’s Abstraction in the Postwar Era.”
The “A Call of All Beings” series of public programs will continue through spring 2026. Highlights include: a pioneering sound performance presented by White Fungus; a live audiovisual performance by Au Sow Yee, weaving together narratives of history, nature, and culture; an interactive performance by Tian Group, a performance art group, inviting audiences to move through a hybrid experience of painting, installation, and performance that reflects the cycles of life and the forces of the natural cosmos; and a series of performance art by Waterfield Studio, in which artists present performance art within the museum to explore the dynamic relationship between contemporary society and the environment.
In addition, the workshop led by Irina Botea Bucan and Jon Dean breaks free from traditional spatial boundaries, using video and sound to take art beyond the museum and closer to everyday life. The museum encourages citizens to actively participate in its diverse public programs and to experience firsthand how art engages in dialogue with daily life, the city, and the world.
